"I cannot recommend Osorio Masonrye enough. They were professional, very clean, and incredibly affordable. Last October 2022 we swapped out our old early-1990s gas insert for a new Heatilator Novus through Wizards Hearth and Home. The mason they recommended (Adam Osorio - Osorio Masonry) and his crew replaced the rock work around the outside of the fireplace to give it a modern-Southwestern look. All in all - we would go through Adam for ALL of our masonry needs moving forward. Thank you!"

"Alex and Donavan were very thorough. Discovered more than what we called them for. We originally wanted information on sealing cracks to eliminate cricket infestation coming through cracks in stem wall. "I cannot recommend JP & his crew enough! Not only does our yard look beautiful, but the entire process from start to finish was absolutely seamless. JP came out the same day I requested a quote and started work the following week. Other contractors told me they couldn't get the tiles I wanted but Angel Sun was able to deliver. They were extremely communicative and walked us through the entire process. Overall extremely reliable & easy to work with. If your brick wall is under 30 years old and is already showing signs of repair, it may be due to poor brickwork and installation. Extreme weather conditions can also accelerate a brick wall’s life span (especially the exterior of a house).

Brick spalling—which refers to the crumbly, flaky, or pitted appearance that can develop over time—is caused by a few different conditions. These include:

  • Climates with constant freeze-thaw cycles

  • Use of non-breathable sealants

  • High-pressure water cleaning

  • Improper installation

While you can’t do anything about the weather, you can preserve your bricks by cleaning them with soapy water and a good old-fashioned scrubbing. Pressure washers may be satisfying to use, but they can eventually wear away the surface of your bricks. If you don’t have advanced-level DIY skills in masonry, you can hire a reputable masonry contractor in your area for your project.

You will repoint over a fraction of the old mortar, but you should scrape away 1/2 to 1 inch of mortar from the joints before repointing. Otherwise, the repointing is only masking the weakened mortar instead of actually replacing it, which could put your chimney at risk of bigger, more expensive damages later on.

Chimney mortar typically lasts 20 to 30 years, depending on its quality, local weather conditions, and maintenance. Over time, exposure to moisture, freezing, and thawing cycles can cause mortar to deteriorate, leading to cracks and gaps. Regular inspections and timely repairs, such as repointing or tuckpointing, can extend the lifespan of chimney mortar by ensuring the structure's integrity.

Most of the time, you don’t need to seal brickwork and can save that money for another area of home improvement. But if your brick is cracking or you live in an area with a lot of excess moisture (either in terms of rain or freezes), sealing can extend the lifetime of your home. But, make sure you use a breathable sealant, like siloxane, to allow the moisture to evaporate on its own.
