The company is so cheap about replacing malfunctioning equipment. My front door lock doesn't work and I have been working on getting a replacement for over a month. Still no luck. An appointment is not an appointment but I rough guideline to when someone may or may not show up. There are a lot of alarm companies and I could never recommend Vivint."

An AC compressor is one of the most expensive parts to replace on an AC unit if it breaks. You’ll pay up to $2,300 if you need a new one. If your AC is blowing warm air, there doesn’t seem to be a lot of air coming out of the ducts at all, or the unit cycles on and off a lot, you may have a broken compressor. Zoned HVAC systems can be worth it for some homeowners, even with the added HVAC replacement costs, because they offer tremendous benefits. Zoned HVAC may offer greater stability and efficiency if your home has multiple levels and experiences constant temperature fluctuations. However, even smaller homes without major fluctuations can benefit since zoned HVAC systems can adjust their temperature more quickly by heating and cooling only the spaces you need.

If both your furnace and AC unit are more than a decade old, it may be a good idea to replace both of them. However, your furnace can last up to three decades, and your air conditioner can typically last up to 15 years, so consulting with a pro before deciding to replace both of them is best. If it’s before that time limit for each, you can fix many problems with repairs or just replace one.

Some HVAC systems tend to use R410A refrigerant, although if you have an older model it may be using R22. R22 is banned due to its harmful environmental and health impacts, and it is a sign that your AC unit is old enough to consider a replacement and the significant efficiency gains that could come with it.

The DOE is phasing out AC units with SEER ratings that fall below 14 or 15. The exact minimum rating depends on your region. In the northern United States, new ACs must have a minimum SEER rating of 14, though you can still buy and install older systems as long as they were compliant when they were manufactured. In the southern and southwestern United States, you cannot buy or install older air conditioners with lower SEER ratings. The minimum rating is between 14.5 and 15, depending on the power of the unit.
