"The work went well. Dead and live weeds were removed or poisoned. Plants, including cacti were trimmed and debris removed, the rocks raked out evenly. One the watering lines was cut while a lantana plant was trimmed, but repaired. Other lines that needed extensions were fixed so that the plant could be watered better. The irrigation system was checked to ensure it was working properly and ok'd. They were instructed to move half of a Totem cactus cluster to the opposite corner of the yard, but somehow a miscommunication happened and the workmen dug up and tried to replant all pieces of the plant cluster in the opposite corner. When this error was noticed, they moved two of the relocated pieces back to its original position, but didn't bury it deep enough and one piece began to lean out of the ground and the other piece fell and broke. The pieces that were left in the opposite side of the yard also leaned over and one part of that cluster fell and cracked, also. The plant ended up with enough breakage that the original plant was trimmed so that heads were retained and replanted in two clusters of three at opposite corners at the back of the yard. The tall totems were severely compromised into restarting their growth from the shorter pieces, but I felt that they still had enough height to look attractive and had a chance to reroot and grow from the heads again on each side of the yard and probably will grow up looking good. The crew also sprayed Roundup and pre-emergent over the entire yard areas to kill what was low and sprouted and to prevent seeds from sprouting, as well to preserve their work. I appreciate All Terrain's professionalism, commitment to duty and follow-through, maintaining high standards for customers, and taking responsibility for damage. They were more than others I had interviewed or experienced in the past, but I have full confidence in All Terrains' level of professionalism. I think the maintenance supervisor, Chris is largely the reason for such a good turn out."

"This was my first experience with the company. From the start, it was a bit of a disappointment. We were offered via email an appointment for the yard crew. We called several times over a few days to confirm and no one ever answered the phone. We finally left a message confirming our appointment. The day of the scheduled appointment, no one ever showed up. I waited 3 hours and finally called (no answer again) and left a message. I was sent an email the following day saying we never confirmed and that is why they didn't come. I called again (no answer) and resulted to emailing back, which is not my preferred form of communication. Long story long, appointment was finally confirmed. The main crew member was nice and seemed knowledgeable. We chatted for a bit regarding some questions I had about some yard maintenance and tree upkeep. I felt he had a good grasp on landscaping. I explained what I wanted accomplished and they got to work.
I will say that the two men were efficient and quick. It was disappointing, however, that I paid for 4 hours of labor and they were done in about an hour and 15 mins. Upon inspecting the job after they left, there were several weeds left all over the yard, and a particularly weedy area was just weed whacked down - not even sprayed so those weeds will grow back very quickly. The major areas of the yard which needed to be addressed were done well.
Overall, the job was done. I expected that I would receive 4 labor hours, but only got about 2.5. With the extra time they had left, it would have been nice if they would have been more detailed in their maintenance, like pulling the weeds and/or spraying what was left or even racking the rocks. Based upon other reviews, I would have expected more from this company.

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

While the terms deck and porch are often used interchangeably, they are two distinct structures. A porch is a covered structure, usually attached to the front of a home, that offers protection from the elements. In contrast, a deck is an open, uncovered platform, often attached to the back or side of a home. Because porches have a roof, they typically require less maintenance than decks, but both features need regular cleaning and repairs to stay in good condition.

Covering your deck with a breathable tarp can protect it from snow, ice, and cold winter temperatures. This is a good winterizing solution if you don’t plan to use your deck at all during the colder months. However, it might be best to skip the tarp if you’ll still be walking on your deck or using it in a limited capacity.

Composite decking boards aren't your only options for building a deck. There are several other types of materials for decks, including wood and aluminum decking. Wood decking comes in many different wood species, offering natural beauty and classy timelessness to your yard. Aluminum is a lightweight, water-resistant, and low-maintenance material that is also non-slip.

When installing deck boards, screws are generally a better option than nails. Screws offer superior holding strength over time, keeping the boards securely in place. In contrast, nails are more likely to pop out, which can create a tripping hazard. While you can use either, we recommend using 3-inch galvanized deck screws. To minimize the risk of cracking the wood, it's a good practice to drill small pilot holes before driving the screws into the deck joists.

Generally, a patio is more accessible than a standard deck because patios are constructed at ground level. However, decks can be made accessible by adding a wheelchair-accessible ramp, a vertical lift, or a stair lift along the entry. An ADA-compliant deck ramp costs about $3,000 on average. The additional investment will provide a much friendlier experience for your guests with movement impairments.
