"While buying a home in Sun City West our inspection reported that attic had blown insulation blocking all the soffit vents. East Valleys crew went to the home and spent hours checking the issue in the attic, in the August heat no less, and let us know that the inspector was mistaken and that the vents were free and clear. They even checked other houses in the vicinity to investigate further. Two other companies who refused to enter the attic ("I know what attics look like") proposed a small number of external OHagin vents instead which wouldn't have solved the issue if it existed. 2x4 walls can hold R-13 or R-15 batts of insulation, which is usually about 3.5 inches thick. You should also check with your local building codes to see if there’s a required thickness you need to adhere to. 

You can also use R-value maps to determine the best thickness and ratings for where you live. For example, someone in Texas doesn’t need as thick of insulation as someone in Montana. Energy Star has a good one you can reference.

One of the disadvantages of soffit vents is they can bleed warm air from the attic during winter, resulting in slightly higher energy bills and a colder house. There are ways to mitigate this effect—mostly just closing the vent in the fall. What’s most important is your attic is ventilated to some degree in the winter.

A vapor barrier keeps moisture out of the crawl space, while insulation reduces the amount of unconditioned air—and sometimes moisture—that enters the space. Coupling a vapor barrier with insulation can help prevent humidity and related moisture damage in a crawl space while also making your home more energy-efficient. Just be sure to use insulation that won’t get damaged from moisture, like rigid foam board or expanding spray foam insulation.

In addition to adding insulation to your attic, you may want to add a radiant barrier. A radiant barrier works by using reflective material, such as foil, on the attic floor. As heat penetrates the roof and enters the attic, the radiant barrier reflects the heat upward and back through the roof. If you receive a lot of direct sunlight on the roof, using both a radiant barrier and insulation in your attic can provide significant benefits.

Whether plaster walls should be insulated depends on whether the walls are at particular risk of moisture problems. In many cases, you can insulate plaster walls, while in others, it's a poor decision because of the lack of a vapor barrier. Choose a reputable insulation contractor to help you decide if and how to proceed to increase your home's energy efficiency.
