"ChemDry was the first company to contact me after my searches on HomeAdvisor and another site. Their estimate seemed reasonable so I hired them - they said they would be at my home between 9 and 10AM - Hal (owner) and Richie (sp?) arrived at 9:10 AM - Richie started working while Hal left to do another estimate. I had a lot of bad traffic patterns and one spotty place in the living room - Hal made it clear that these areas may not turn out "totally clean" - I understood the limitations of the process and hoped for the best. To my great satisfaction, these areas turned out better than expected. Hal and Richie are friendly and efficient. The cost of three rooms and a hallway was $110. I am a satisfied ChemDry customer and will be calling them again in the future."

Upholstering questions, answered by experts

Pros cover many fixes, from upholstery renewals to joint reinforcement.

Doing your own upholstery work is possible, but it’s typically a better idea to leave the work to professionals. Without experience and the proper tools, it’s difficult to get a professionally finished appearance for your furniture, and many DIYers end up spending money on tools and materials only to hire a professional when they can’t get the fabric to look right. If you have reupholstery experience, feel free to give it a shot. However, if you’re not confident in your skill level or you’re working with antiques, it’s worth the money to hire a pro.

Upholstery reduces waste sent to landfills, limits resource consumption, and supports sustainable living practices, provided fabrics meet standards.

It is generally worth repairing leather furniture rather than replacing it, as it is typically more affordable and the material tends to retain its value. A typical repair averages around $250, which is significantly less than the thousands of dollars a replacement could cost. Even a full reupholstering, which can cost up to $4,000, may still be more economical than buying new. With proper care, repaired leather furniture can last for many years, making the investment worthwhile. However, if the underlying structure or frame of the furniture is damaged or malfunctioning, replacement might be a better option. The quality of the leather and the furniture piece are also important factors. For a definitive answer, it is best to consult a leather repair professional to assess your specific situation.

The time required to reupholster furniture depends on the item's size, complexity, and condition. The hands-on work can range from 2-3 hours for a simple dining chair to 10 to 20 hours for a large sofa. The total project timeline with a professional, including fabric sourcing and scheduling, typically ranges from one to three weeks.

Several factors can affect the timeline. Antique furniture often takes longer due to the delicate care required. If additional repairs are needed, such as sanding or refinishing wood components, the process will also take more time. A DIY reupholstery project will usually take significantly longer than a professional job.
