I had a leak which included foundation repair, sheetrock repair, replacing the hardwood floor, trimming down some doors, laying new vapor barrier under my house and regrouting a shower. The hardwood matches exactly and I could not be more pleased with the Johnson Brothers. They came highly recommended to me by a large foundation company in the area that could not work on my old house since my crawl space was not tall enough. They told me that there are alot of people that say they do foundation work, and some may be cheaper, but if you want someone that knows what they are doing call the Johnson Brothers. Your floors should be completely level for tile, otherwise you risk damaging the tiles in the future. When there are even small gaps or hills in the subfloor beneath the tile, this puts more pressure on the tile when you walk around on the floor. With repeated traffic, the tiles are at risk of cracking, and you’ll have to deal with tile repairs sooner than if the floor was completely level.

No, tiling over painted walls or wallpapered surfaces is generally not recommended. Textured surfaces and paints will affect the adhesive, possibly causing tiles to lift or fall off. Painted walls with a semi-gloss or high-gloss finish are particularly difficult for adding tiles. It’s wise to strip the paint first if you install the tiles to drywall, although it’s still best to opt for a cement backer board.

The rule tells you how to cut tile to install it in a corner. The 3/4/5 rule recommends that you should have 3 feet across on one straight line, four feet on the other perpendicular line, and 5 feet of length from the end of one of the lines to the other. You’re making a right triangle with the tile, and the hypotenuse (the line across from where the 3-foot lie and 4-foot line meet) should be 5 feet long.

You can lay tile directly on a plywood countertop, but if it’s a high-traffic surface in a kitchen, it’s better to add a moisture-resistant base. Plywood is susceptible to moisture, so if dampness seeps through from the surface around the sink or where you prep food, it can cause the plywood to warp, leading to grout damage, cracked tiles, or mold growth under the surface. 

Add a T-shaped spacer to each corner of a tile when placing it. You’ll want to nudge the tiles closer together so the spacers are touching each corner. When you’re done installing your tile, you can remove each spacer, wash them, and use them for your next project.
