Marble is a porous natural stone that needs sealant to minimize staining. Dark or acidic liquids, like red wine, coffee, and lemon, are the worst culprits. 

Acid can seriously damage granite countertops and lead to etching and erosion. This is why cleaning with vinegar isn’t recommended. Other acidic items that you should keep away from your granite countertops include:

  • Acetone nail polish remover

  • Tomatoes

You will need to clean it often to prevent dirt and grit from scratching the finish and surface, keep it dry, clean up spills immediately, and have it professionally sealed and refinished at least once a year to maintain the shine and water-tight surface.
