"The 2 individuals were professional starting with their initial assessment visit. Their projections that referenced necessary materials and time requirements were amazingly accurate which was important to me as I truly wanted the project to be completed in a timely fashion. They accomplished that as promised. They arrived early each day and worked late on most instances. Most important and pleasing for me was their craftmanship. They displayed a total knowledge of my requirements for perfect mitered cuts on each board as EVERY board on my deck consists of 45 degree mitered cuts. The gentlemrn are the eal deal. They are on my forever list. I am very satisfied."

"Braden was professional, explained exactly what he would do on my project. He was diligent in contacting me regarding the paint color I requested and applied 2 coats. He repaired the support beams as well as replacing the boards that were in need of replacing on top of the deck and lattice work at the base. I will recommend him & request Mr. Melton to do future jobs."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

Your deck may pop, and your neighbor’s deck may not for a number of reasons. Whether or not a deck pops will depend on how it was made, the conditions it’s exposed to, and the materials. Improper spacing is a common reason for increased pressure between deck boards. Moisture penetration is another.

Local building codes don’t specify the number of steps a deck can have before a railing is required, mainly because stair height varies widely. Most areas require decks 30 inches or higher to have a railing. While not exact, that roughly equates to four to seven steps.

The life expectancy of deck boards varies widely based on the material, climate, and maintenance. Untreated wood boards typically last 10 to 30 years with proper care, while pressure-treated boards can last up to 50 years. Hardwoods generally outlast softwoods. Composite boards also tend to last longer than natural wood. Environmental factors like arid or humid climates can shorten a deck's lifespan. To extend the life of wood decking, it's important to consistently clean and seal it to protect against moisture, UV light, and insects.

The proper height for a stair riser or deck step is between four and seven inches, with seven inches often considered the most comfortable. Building your stairs to this height ensures a strain-free step position and minimizes the risk of trip and fall injuries. For optimal safety and comfort, especially on deck stairs, a rise of around seven inches should be paired with a tread depth (or run) of at least 10 to 12 inches. While it is possible to design stairs with risers up to 12 inches, this height can be challenging for children, pets, or individuals with mobility issues. Always check with your local building codes, as they may mandate specific dimensions that differ from these general recommendations.

Both deck footings and deck posts help prop up your deck. However, footings are the bottommost parts of a deck that touch the ground. They’re usually made of concrete. Posts are pieces of wood that attach to the top of the footings with brackets. They run upwards and connect to the underside of your deck to support its weight.
