"Excellent work. We purchased natural cherry cabinets in shaker style, with the panels made of solid wood rather than veneer. That is more difficult work, as each panel has to be constructed from several planks. Moreover, the clear finish would leave any flaws more visible. Simply put, the doors are beautiful--flawless in both construction and finish. They are similar in quality to custom cherry furniture we own."

"Des Moines home remodeling, surpass my expectations. If you are in search of a remodeling company that takes care of your home, listens to your remodeling ideas, gets the job done on time, on estimate and most of all with quality, Des Moines Home Remodeling is the right choice! We mainly worked with Bayu, but he was communicative throughout the project, super hard worker, sent us photos of the work progressing and ensured that we were completely satisfied with the work performed prior to finishing the job. Des Moines Home Remodeling would let us know what day and time they will be performing work and they were always punctual. At the end of the project Des Moines home remodeling left my house clean. Des Moines home remodeling even took care of some additional holes in my drywalls that I had forgotten to mention in the original estimate at no additional expense. Des Moines home remodeling finish a basement wall, enclosed a basement door, remove popcorn and texture walls and ceiling in 5 separate living spaces and it was just perfection. Excellent customer service and responsiveness. I will be hiring Des Moines home remodeling for many more home projects in the near future."

Closets questions, answered by experts

DIY is possible for basic designs. Professional services ensure proper construction and space optimization.

There are certainly luxury upgrades you can make but you can seriously improve the look and functionality of a closet without spending much money. Color matching will make the closet seem bigger so any shelves painted the same as the wall is a good tip. While pre-made closet organizers may seem expensive they offer an aesthetic look that's hard to achieve with DIY methods. Lastly, removing clutter and unworn items will help the closet seem bigger and cleaner.

Bump-out additions can add some space to a closet without requiring any significant structural work. This entails pushing back the existing rear or side of the closet, simply moving the wall into either an adjacent room or unused space. For ground-floor closets, this could even be extended to the exterior of the home, but that has its own complications. Bump-outs are a good discussion to have with your contractor if you’re just looking to increase the space a little—not renovate the entire closet space.

If you have a bathroom closet with movable shelves, you can place them at virtually any spacing that works for you. Useful measurements between shelves in the working, or middle, section can be 10 to 16 inches for towels or linens. Lower or higher shelving could be up to 24 inches between shelves to store lesser-used or bulky items or boxes.

Fortunately, there are no hard and fast rules or regulations regarding the height of closet shelving. However, the typical height for a single closet shelf with a hanging bar is 70 inches from the floor. For a double-hanging system, use 84 to 85 inches from the floor for the top one and 42 inches for the lower.
