It’s not usually a problem, although you may want to check the specifics of your cabinets first. A wall of kitchen cabinets can support about 600 pounds, including what’s inside and anything resting on top. Keep that limit in mind when adding DIY shelves or décor to the tops of cabinets. Using a shim or another type of self-leveling feet on the bottom edge of your cabinet bases will help to level them out if you’re installing them on a less-than-level surface. For outdoor kitchen cabinets, choose wood that is naturally more weather-resistant. Teak, Brazilian walnut, white oak, and mahogany are all excellent choices. Avoid pine, cedar, and other softwoods, as they are more susceptible to damage and catch fire quickly. No matter what type of wood you choose, you’ll need to apply sealants, oils, and stains regularly to protect your cabinets from harm.

There is no official name for an open gap between the top of the cabinets and the ceiling. However, when that area is covered with a boxy shape to hide wires or pipes, this is known as a soffit. In some cases, this area may also be hidden with a bulkhead, a lower ceiling area that fits just above the cabinets.

Walls in good condition with an even surface should be fine for frameless cabinet installation. Older, uneven, or warped walls could create problems.
