Elevate your pool or place it on a foundation to prevent moisture buildup along the bottom of the container. You can usually use the water from your tap to refill your pool, whether it's city water or well water. If you're going to use well water to fill your pool, make sure you have an adequate amount of water available and that the water is free of contaminants. A water delivery service may also be able to bring water to refill your pool.

While the main ingredient in pool shock is chlorine, it is used differently than traditional pool chlorine tablets. Shock is a highly concentrated amount of chlorine and other chemicals that quickly raise the chlorine levels in your water to prevent issues with imbalances. Cloudy water, algae, or poor pH may require pool shock to fix the issue rapidly.

Any number between 7.2 and 7.8 is an ideal pH for swimming pools or 80 to 120 ppm. Your pool testing kit should be able to measure both of these numbers. If your pool’s pH is below this range, the water is too acidic and can cause scaling and damage to pool equipment. If the water’s pH is above this range, it can decrease the effectiveness of necessary chemicals, like chlorine.

You do not have to drain your pool before converting it to salt water. The times when you should consider doing so are when you have been using an antibacterial agent. These sanitation products do not mix well with the saltwater system, so you will need to start fresh. You can either drain the pool or get rid of the antibacterial agent with chlorine. Check with a pool technician if you are unsure if this applies to you.
