"Bluewater Exteriors provided excellent service! We had to delay install due to a trip and they were accommodating to our schedule, and let us know we could schedule them to install after we returned. They were efficient with the 24-window replacement, completing them in just 2 1/2 days. It's great that they were accommodating with the work and communicated their process throughout the install. The walk around at the end was a nice touch to ensure everything was done to our satisfaction. We would recommend them based on our experience with Will, Dan, and installers Tim and Owen who were amazing. Reasonable competitive prices, Foley home owners."

"This small company does outstanding work. The skill level of owner Jeff Chevillet and his assistant Eddie when caulking and painting with trim brushes and rollers was outstanding and the quality of latex paint used was the best. They worked quickly and efficiently with little or no mess, used razor blades to remove any paint on windows and thoroughly cleaned up after the work was complete. They showed up on time and did what they said that they would do. The exterior repairs using 1 x 6, 2 x 6 and hardipanel was quality work done quickly. I highly recommend this company for like work."

Windows questions, answered by experts

Whether or not you need permission to change the windows in your house depends on your local laws. If you’re enlarging an opening or installing a new window and need to make structural changes to the house, you’ll need a permit. In most locations, you won’t need permission if you’re just replacing a window with another window of the same size. The window installation company you work with will be able to help you navigate any planning permits you may need.

In most cases, it's worth it to install hurricane windows—especially if you live in an area prone to hurricanes and storms. Hurricane windows not only protect your windows from breaking but also protect the interior of your home from storm damage while also potentially reducing your homeowner's insurance premium. On top of that, hurricane windows have an ROI of 80% to 85%.

Bay windows and garden windows differ in both size and window angle. Garden windows are smaller than bay windows and extend from the house at 90-degree angles, creating a box-like shape. Bay windows, often much larger than garden windows, consist of three windows set at 25- to 45-degree angles to jut out from your home.

Casement window types differ from standard windows in that they have a hinge on the side or the top of the window so that it can open inwards or outwards. If your casement windows open upward, they usually have a crank to operate them. Casement windows with side hinges typically operate like a door, opening and closing without a crank.

Picture windows last about 20 to 50 years, depending on the material, your location, and how well you maintain the windows over the years. Materials like vinyl and aluminum may not last as long, while fiberglass can last many years. Wood will last decades if you keep up with maintenance. Homes in areas with harsh weather throughout the year may cause windows to have shorter lifespans.
