"Great company to work with if you have ANY water issues at all in your home. We purchased the biggest bundle and could not be happier. Our water is softer, meaning I have to scrub the showers less (YAY!) and our drinking water is safer. 10/10 would recommend."

"I compared prices and since they had serviced old unit before, they provided a much better price than any of the competitors. In addition they took off the cost of the Thermostat when I went and bought a Wi-Fi thermostat -- and still took the time to install the system that wasn't theirs. They were punctual and professional, as well as accurate their time needed for installation. They provided regarding aspects of insulation and installation of unit. To top it off they even allowed me to borrow a couple of tools since I was doing some other home repairs. Even offered a military discount upon request.

"GFG replaced our 20 year old water heater. They were fast & friendly, plus did great work. Perhaps a bit pricy but competitive, and thus acceptable for work that'll last another 15-20 years. Thanks GFG."

"The yearly service works out to be $50 a month. We've had two water heaters replaced through them because of a fault in them. They're usually very responsive. I like that I can request the service online. The only thing is, I wish that there was a better avenue for emergency services. If something doesn't work right away usually it takes a couple of days to get someone out and sometimes you can't wait two days without water."

Small jobs welcome

"Byron Peavey responded right away by phone and scheduled a visit to correct my plumbing pipe problems. He gave me a very reasonable quote and he did a very professional job on my house. He corrected my plumbing problem in two days. This was fast for a complete plumbing water re-piping project on my whole house. He cleaned up all mess and left my house cleaner than it was before he did the work. I would recommend Byron Peavy Plumbing to everyone in the Montgomery, AL area. Marvin Collier"

Water Heaters questions, answered by experts

The lifespan of a water heater depends on its type, usage, and maintenance schedule. Traditional tank-style water heaters typically last between 8 and 12 years, though the range can be as wide as 6 to 15 years. Within this category, gas models often last 8-12 years, while electric models may last 10-15 years. In contrast, tankless water heaters have a significantly longer lifespan, often lasting up to 20 years or more. Factors like heavy usage, hard water, and sediment buildup can shorten a unit's life. To extend its lifespan, it is crucial to perform regular maintenance, such as flushing the tank annually and scheduling professional inspections. If your unit is over a decade old and shows signs of rust, leaks, strange noises, or inconsistent heating, it is likely time for a replacement.

A well-maintained hot water recirculating pump can last 5 to 15 years. Pumps that run continuously may have a shorter lifespan than demand-controlled models. Hard water can reduce longevity by causing mineral buildup in the pump and pipes. Regular maintenance, such as cleaning or replacing filters, can extend the pump’s lifespan.

While a water heater explosion is rare, it is a serious danger. Be aware of these critical warning signs:

  • Sulfur or Rotten Egg Smell: This is a major red flag, especially for gas water heaters. It can indicate a gas leak, which could ignite and cause an explosion.

  • Leaking Pressure Valve: If the temperature and pressure (T&P) relief valve is leaking, it may not be able to properly regulate internal pressure, creating a risk of bursting.

  • Shaking or Rumbling: Loud rumbling or shaking from the tank can be a sign of extreme pressure buildup.

  • Excessive Heat: If the exterior of the water heater feels unusually hot to the touch, the unit may be overheating dangerously.

  • Rust-Colored Water: This can be a symptom of severe internal corrosion that compromises the tank's integrity.

If you notice any of these signs, especially a gas smell, you must act immediately. Shut off the gas supply to the water heater and call a professional plumber right away to prevent a potential disaster.

Flushing biannually, checking the anode rod, and temperature settings maximize equipment lifespan while reducing surprise costs.

The average water heater holds between 40 and 60 gallons, but the exact amount of water that comes out during draining will depend on your unit’s capacity. The amount of time it takes to drain a water heater averages from 10 to 30 minutes.
