"Jimmy, Josh and their crews took a jungle of a back yard and made it beautiful. The designed and did the entire project. We have received dozens of compliments from our neighbors as well as the City Inspectors. The built the retaining wall and waterfall, did the grading and installed the complete drainage and irrigation systems. Their price was very fair and concrete began the project they stayed on the job until they finished. I would give them six stars if I could. Highly recommend them for all landscape related projects. "B & J Pools installed us an in-ground pool late last year. They do great work. I would recommend them to anyone. Stayed on the timeline they presented and completed the pool on time. We love our pool and kids have been in it everyday this summer. Highly recommend B&J pools."

"For several years, we had experienced an inch of water coming into a section of our garage every time it rained. We contacted APW to install a drain system that would address the problem. I was a bit concerned at first about how the final product would look. I should not have worried as it looks great and works perfectly. After several days of heavy rain recently, we have had not a drop of water make it into the garage. I am no longer concerned about slipping on puddles or having waterlogged boxes and tools getting moldy in the garage. I've already contacted them for a secondary project on the other side of my house."

Retaining Wall Installers questions, answered by experts

Yes, to build a retaining wall, a permit is required. Similarly, any repairs or modifications to an existing retaining wall require permits. If the planned wall measures higher than 4 feet, most municipalities require designs and permits come through a licensed engineer. In some locations, if the wall is shorter than 4 feet, a permit may not be required. For the requirements in your area, contact your local government.

Rebar is a steel support that goes inside concrete to prevent structural damage over time. Concrete is susceptible to impact, weight, and tension. By inserting rebar into the concrete during the installation, you can help extend its lifespan and avoid hazardous situations where the foundation of your home gives way to tensile forces.

Even if you think you know how to build a retaining wall theoretically, doing the actual work is a completely different story. There are lots of nuances in building retaining walls, and the slightest oversight can compromise their integrity. Therefore, we recommend you hire a pro to build, repair, or replace retaining walls.

If you don’t backfill a retaining wall—either at all or adequately enough—the wall won’t drain well, and water will be able to pass through it. Poor drainage will lead to a warped wall or a buildup of hydrostatic pressure, which can eventually collapse your retaining wall. If you have particularly sloped land, consult a structural engineer to ensure your hardscaping is adding value to your home.

Most railroad tie retaining walls have a life span of 20 to 30 years, though you may need to replace your wall sooner if it’s repeatedly exposed to heavy rain, runoff, and excess moisture. Railroad ties are typically treated with creosote, which makes them much more durable than untreated wood. Though they last longer, they don’t last forever. For the most longevity, make sure your retaining wall has a sturdy base and steel reinforcements. You should also install drainage to direct water away from the wall.
