Fifteen years ago my husband entered the concrete industry building high rise condominiums in Destin, FL. After we returned to central Alabama in 2005 he remained in the field of concrete but eventually transitioned into residential flatwork. This has included, but has not been limited to repairing/installing residential driveways, patios, and walkways (specializing in decorative concrete.) Decorative concrete projects are the perfect choice for River Region homeowners who have a vision of a more beautiful version of their home. Most of my career has been in the travel industry. But a few years ago I accepted a marketing position at a well known local concrete contractor; my husband was coincidentally employed by the same company. It was then that I fell in love with concrete, and we both had an epiphany...We could (and CERTAINLY SHOULD) deliver the same services with first rate craftsmanship, and charge only a fair price and NEVER take advantage of or exploit our clients.

The average lifespan of an asphalt driveway ranges from 15 to 30 years, while concrete driveways last between 20 and 30 years, depending on several factors. Extreme temperature changes, cold weather, poor maintenance, and heavy traffic can all shorten the lifespan of your driveway. Be sure to reseal your driveway regularly to protect it from the elements and give it the best chance at a long lifespan.

There’s no single best asphalt grade—it all comes down to where and how it’s used. Highways and heavy-traffic roads need something tough, like polymer-modified asphalt (PMA) or Stone Matrix Asphalt (SMA). Local roads and parking lots rely on the Performance Graded (PG) system, chosen based on climate. A PG 64-28 mix, for example, handles a broad temperature range while simpler, more cost-effective mixes are typically enough for residential driveways. The best grade of asphalt depends on traffic, weather, and your budget, which is why a professional’s input is always a smart move before making a decision.

Paving is a part of hardscaping, so all paving is hardscaping, but not all hardscaping is paving. Paving involves laying down concrete or asphalt, while hardscaping can also include the use of paving stones, bricks, gravel, wood, and more. Hardscape features that involve paving are considered permanent and will increase your property taxes, while some other hardscaping features—like those involving bricks, gravel, and paving stones—will not affect property taxes. Paving also typically requires a permit, while hardscaping features considered temporary will not.

Yes, with colored finishes and decorative stamping for a personalized touch.

When asphalt cures, it typically changes from a very dark black hue to a lighter, more matte gray color. Cured asphalt also won’t be tacky or sticky to the touch or emit any odors from the asphalt mix. Additionally, the surface of fully cured asphalt won’t deform under any pressure.
