If you use a highly porous tile in the shower, the tiles can wear down faster, meaning they’ll need to be replaced much sooner.

Uniform spacing between tiles is important for a professional and clean appearance. To achieve this spacing, tile spacers should be placed between the tiles and left in place until the mortar hardens and the tiles are secure. You can use X-shaped spacers vertically in between the tiles and laid flat at the corners.

If your budget can stretch to it, opting for porcelain tile over ceramic tile makes sense if you need something hard-wearing for a busy, moisture-retaining space. However, the cost of installing ceramic tiles is less expensive. They’re a little softer and easier to work with, making them a good choice for small, decorative DIY projects.

Just because you can, doesn’t always mean you should. You can apply new tile over existing tile in a bathroom, but the new tile may not look great if you lay it over worn, cracked, or uneven tiles. The adhesive may not be able to attach the new tile to the old tile properly, and this will add more weight to the drywall.

It takes more time and effort, but removing existing tiles before retiling a bathroom is worth it.
