"I had a great experience with Thompson Home Repair. He was prompt, friendly, and easy to work with. The quality of the work he did (replacing and repairing drywall and popcorn ceiling) was excellent. I particularly appreciated that he painted a larger section of the wall than I anticipated (not just the repaired areas) so that the entire work area looked like new and blended well with everything else."

Small jobs welcome

"Josh did a simple skim coat on my cieling. It was a 2 day job for application and drying then sanding the next day. Great guy that shows up on time and was within my budget. He has great communication and will work with you when work can be done. What to expect and a fair price. It was super dusty so be ready for that. He did a great job and couldnt ask for better service. Well worth it."

"Work was done on time and quickly. Cleaned up well afterwards. Repairs made as needed and removal of rusting guttering was done. Nice person to work with. He did what he said at a price we agreed to. I would trust him with the keys to do any type of work again."

Drywall questions, answered by experts

Plaster walls typically last between 30 and 70 years, but depending on the quality of the materials and the moisture levels in the building, they can last for over 100 years. With expert application and consistent maintenance, plaster can even last for centuries. To extend its lifespan, it is important to have the plaster professionally installed, address any water damage promptly, and repair small cracks as they appear. Regular inspections by a professional can help identify and address concerning cracks before they become significant issues.

A nail in drywall cannot hold very much—usually only a few pounds. A nail in a stud can add support and hold around 20 pounds. If you are trying to hang something heavier, get some help from drywall anchors—toggle bolts are very strong and able to withstand more weight.

Drywall is safe to cut as long as you follow proper procedures, such as wearing personal protective equipment and using the right tools to score and cut the drywall. When cutting new drywall, it can release dust with silica and other compounds that could pose health risks. Leave cutting drywall to the pros, or wear a high-quality respiratory mask, goggles, and other PPE when handling drywall.

It is more difficult to drywall a ceiling than it is to drywall a wall, but not so hard that DIYers can’t tackle it. One of the main issues with hanging drywall on your ceiling is getting it into place. Drywall isn’t light so, if you are hanging full drywall panels, you will need at least two (it’s better with more) people to hold the panel while you drill it into the ceiling as a single piece can weigh between 40 and 60 pounds and will need to be held in place for up to 10 minutes.

While textured walls can elevate a space in many ways, there are a couple of downsides to consider. Namely, they’re hard to clean, and some textures fall out of fashion quickly. Make sure to consider all your options to find one you truly love before diving in.
