"Dave Smith was AWESOME! Very knowledgeable and patient. We added new items to our order at the 12th hour and he came back twice to make sure that everything was completed as we desired. We also had Alarm Protection Group secure our office. Dave Smith and Co. make the process very easy-Highly recommended."

"Our dealings with Protect Your Home/ADT were delightful. We received a call back very fast after requesting a quote through Angie's List. We were able to complete everything on the phone; there was no paperwork or downtime. I had to call Customer Service with a question about the keypad, and they ended up telling me other helpful details on top of my original question."

"It went perfectly. Len, the locksmith, explained what he was going to and why prior to doing the work (including any additional costs, and why). He was very quick and extremely courteous. The additional costs were less then I thought, and combined with what I paid through the deal on Angie's List, I was extremely pleased with all aspects of their service!! I would definitely hire them again!!"

"Great. This was my first experience at an auto shop since I moved to Alabama and they were very friendly and professional. It didn't take them long at all to diagnose the problems and I was in and out in a few hours. They did the most to help me out and made me feel comfortable.

"We tasked Eric, the owner, to hang an interior sliding door. While it sounds easy, there's a lot of skill involved, to ensure that the door hangs properly, and slides easily. Eric purchased the door we'd selected, a week later, the door was ready for pickup. Eric spent 3-1/2 hours, hanging the said door. It was done perfectly. His price for the job was very reasonable too. Also, Eric has a very easy going and friendly demeanor which, makes it very pleasant to work with him. All in all, we're 100% satisfied with his skills and workmanship."

Locksmiths questions, answered by experts

Locksmiths recommend changing your locks once every seven years for the best security at your home. Locks can wear out over time, so you should inspect your locks regularly. A higher grade lock provides you with more cycles than those with a lower grade.

Expect to pay between $50 to $200 if you hire a locksmith to change your locks. That figure includes labor and the cost of basic hardware. The cost will naturally be higher if you plan to install more expensive locks, like smart locks, and if you need a lot of them.

Homeowners can save money by replacing locks themselves. A typical rekeying kit costs about $10 to $25. The only additional cost is purchasing new house keys, and those are no more than a few dollars per key. If you want to replace the locks on your own completely, the main cost is the price of the locks themselves. A standard knob-style lock starts around $25, while electronic locks and smart locks will run in the hundreds of dollars. The only additional tools you should need are a tape measure, screwdriver, and screws if they are not already provided.

You can cut a door knob off using a sawzall, but you risk causing additional damage to the door itself. You’ll also need to completely replace the door knob, costing you extra money and another trip to the hardware store.

Yes, keyless locks can deter burglars, mostly because they boost security and offer advanced features. Most models allow for unique codes or temporary access, making it harder for intruders to break in. Many of these smart locks even alert you if someone tries to tamper with them. However, you need to remember that while they provide an added layer of protection, no lock is completely foolproof. Pairing these locks with good security habits—like proper lighting and surveillance cameras—creates a strong defense to help stop intruders in their tracks.

Standard residential deadbolt locks come with a steel bolt that locks your door into place using a key (or keypad) on one side and a thumb turn on the other. When you lock it, the bolt slides into a strike plate on your door jamb to secure your door shut.
