  • Creosote buildup in the chimney, which is a black, tar-like substance

  • A broken or stuck damper

Sap, despite its stickiness, is primarily made of water and is responsible for wood being “green” when it’s first cut. Green wood doesn’t burn very easily and will snap and crackle a lot, not ideal for a fire pit or fireplace. That’s why it’s best to let fresh, sap-filled wood season or dry out for at least a season before you start burning.

The time it takes for creosote to build up in a chimney can vary depending on how often you use your fireplace and the wood you burn. Creosote can start accumulating after just a few fires, especially if you burn unseasoned wood or allow fires to smolder. Regularly using the fireplace without proper maintenance can lead to significant creosote buildup within a few months. To prevent hazardous buildup, have your chimney inspected and cleaned at least once a year.

A fireplace can take anywhere from a few hours to several weeks to remodel, depending on the complexity of the project. For example, for a simple paint job, you’ll spend very little time touching up your fireplace, while larger remodels that involve replacing or repairing a fireplace can take up to 4 weeks.

To stop it, you need to replace the air your fireplace draws out through the chimney, so open a window to try and increase the airflow. Sometimes turning on a kitchen or bathroom exhaust fan can help, but they could also be the cause of the backdraft depending on the air pressure inside your home. You may need to install a makeup air system (MUAS) or chimney fan.
