In August of 2014, AT&T announced that the shutdown of its second-generation, or 2G, wireless network would be complete by the end of 2016. This move was approved by the Federal Communications Commission and affects all home security systems nationwide, regardless of supplier. On Jan. 1, 2017, the 2G wireless network will cease to exist, and security systems with this obsolete technology will no longer work. Bottom line: If your security system is using 2G cellular technology, contact your security dealer to schedule an upgrade.

Advancing technology

Much like the change from analog television to digital was intended to improve television communication a few years ago, the move to 3G and 4G cellular radio communication is a natural progression of cellular communication due to advancements in technology. We’ve seen the evolution of the iPhone with new features introduced frequently that offer users many new and improved benefits. Similarly, the switch to updated cellular technology in alarm systems will improve the reliability and functionality of your security system.

Undoubtedly, you invested in a security system to protect your home and family. Like any other household maintenance, proper upkeep of your security system is your responsibility and (in this case) critical to the proper communication of your system. Without upgraded communication, your system will not communicate properly if an alarm is tripped. Don’t wait until the last minute to upgrade your technology. You may not know if your security system is out of date until an emergency occurs and the system fails.

Home security system upgrades

The upgraded cellular technology provides increased reliability, easier user functionality, cost savings and many added conveniences. With a dedicated cellular communication line, systems can't be compromised by power outages or sabotaged by cut phone lines. Users can enjoy the convenience of arming and disarming their security systems from their cell phones or mobile devices.

Time flies, which means you are running out of time to make the switch before it’s forced on you. Not only will this benefit the reliability of your system, but it will also give you peace of mind. Burglars will usually bypass a house if it requires too much effort to break in. Having a working security system creates a barrier between your home and a burglar.
