Unfold the possibilities

Bifold doors are space-effective as they open and close like accordions. Because they fold into a double stack when fully opened and take up barely any room, they are one of the most popular types of closet doors. Additionally, bifold doors can also be used on a pantry, in your dining room, or even as patio doors leading to your back porch. If you are looking to install bifold doors yourself, follow the steps in this guide to ensure proper installation.
Start by completely removing the old door and hardware. Then, measure your door and frame so you know what size of bifold doors to get. You should also check the threshold and jambs and make adjustments if needed, so they are level. You can also choose to repair the door frame by filling in old screw holes.
Next, go find your preferred bifold doors from your local hardware store. Thoroughly read through the installation manual and get to know the different parts included in the kit. Most kits come with a set of pivot brackets, the top and bottom pivot, the bifold door track, jamb brackets, a spring snugger, and a set of screws in various lengths.
Using a hacksaw, cut the top track to leave a 1/6-inch gap on each end. Center the track on top of the frame with the pivot bracket facing the jamb. Then, center the jamb bracket on the floor. Make sure the bottom track is level to the floor and drill pilot holes. Fasten the bracket to the jamb with the screws that came with your bifold door.
If you want to paint the doors, now is the best time to do so. Allow the door to fully dry before mounting it onto the frame. Be careful not to paint over predrilled holes. If you are okay with the door’s original color, skip this step.

Once the door is fully dried, gently tap the pivots into the holes at the top and bottom of the door using a hammer. Lay each door panel on the floor next to each other and push them together. Attach the hinges and mounting plates. Note that mounting plates should be installed in the same direction as the door’s swing.

Lift the door and hold it upright. You might want a helper for this step to ensure safety. Align the top pivots with the top brackets and push them in. Place the bottom pivots on the jamb brackets. Test open and close the bifold doors a few times. If the door touches the floor or the jamb, lift the door and turn the bottom pivot accordingly to increase the height.
Finally, install door handles, levers, or knobs to your bifold doors following the manufacturer’s instructions. Some bifold doors come with aligners. Screw them to the back of the door: they will help keep the doors closed.
Most bifold doors in the market come with all necessary hardware and are designed for easy installation. However, bifold doors can be heavy, and any misalignment would prevent the doors from functioning properly. If you’ve never installed bifold doors before, it’s best to hire a local door installer. Door installation costs $40 to $90 per hour for the labor, and the final price depends on the design, material, and type of doors.
Similarly, you should hire a pro to install exterior bi-fold doors because they require additional insulation and protection to ensure your home’s safety. Folding patio door installation costs $3,550 to $15,000 on average.
