Price - Excellent Carter Fence's quote was significantly less expensive than comparable quotes. The sales consultant - Problematic, but no longer with the company Installation was scheduled and installation was relatively problem free, although the sales consultant, Bruce (who I understand is no longer with Carter Fence) was a little rough around the edges and yelled at me several times, once because he wasn't looking and tripped over my flower bed edging. My only complaint about the fence design is that I wasn't given much information about the different ways it could be installed. For example, horizontal boards (on which the pickets are mounted) for the the front picket were installed with the fence posts behind them, rather than between the fence posts - it wouldn't matter, except the already narrow strip of flower bed next to my front walk lost at least 4 inches with the new fence, leaving some of my plants on the other side of the fence. Finally, the consultant was not on site for most of the day and as a result, the portion of fence where water drains down the yard (which I had shown him when we talked about my needs) was not appropriately raised so that the water will run under it, rather than soaking the bottom of the pickets. This isn't a problem yet, and hopefully I can dig a trench of some sort, so the water can still drain. Despite these problems, I'm not inclined to penalize Carter Fence too much for this consultant, since he's no longer with the company (but that's why I didn't rate an A for professionalism). Installation - Quick The crew worked hard. They pulled up a lot of viny weeds that had embedded into the old chain link and worked quickly to construct the new fence. It would have been nice to have a list of options for decision - things weren't installed exactly as I envisioned (gate direction, loss of space in the front flower strip due to how the rails were installed, etc.), but nothing was a deal-breaker. Quality & Customer Service - Beautiful fence and good customer service The fence looks fantastic and I'm very happy with it. The only problems that I've had are with the gates, which settle every couple months to the point that they won't open or close (the top of the gate hits the fence post and either sticks because it's so snug or can't clear the post at all, so the gate won't close)... this has happened 3 or 4 times since April. Carter Fence has been very responsive about sending people out to adjust them, but I'm worried that they won't be willing to do this indefinitely (or beyond the first year, during which the guarantee covers the gate adjustments). I'm not sure what the longer-term solution might be, but hope that I can work with them to find one. One final note - During a big storm this fall, a very large limb fell on the privacy fence and knocked two fence posts crooked and caused an 8' or 9'section of fence to lean. I called Carter Fence to come look and provide a quote to fix it, and they fixed it for free, since no new materials were needed (and they were coming anyway to adjust the gate). I really appreciated the kindness! Overall, I highly recommend Carter Fence. For the price, they installed a beautiful fence. I only hope we can resolve the gate issues or they can show me how to make the adjustments myself.
