Why shell out thousands of dollars for rooftop solar when you can get the same benefits from community solar. It’s a simple, efficient, and smart alternative to rooftop solar. The only difference is that power is produced on a local solar farm, where it sends the energy back to the grid, reducing the resilience of fossil fuels.\n\nStill sold on rooftop solar? Consider this: \n• If you are doing it to save the planet, go with the community solar. Supporting a community solar provider like Nautilus will expand their network, making it cheaper for everyone and reach even better economies of scale.\n• If you are doing it to save yourself money, go with the community solar. It’s much cheaper for them to produce and you’ll get a discount of 10% or more on your electricity bill.\n• If you are doing it as an investment in your house, go with community solar. Unlike rooftop solar, which could be a net-negative when you sell your home in 10 years – especially if you haven't factored in ongoing maintenance costs – community solar avoids these pitfalls. \n\nToday's cost of money vs tomorrow's cost of solar is a short-investor's bet.\nMore reasons to consider ‘roofless’ community solar over solar panel installation: \n• No costly upfront expenses\n• No ongoing maintenance costs\n• No monthly or annual fees \n• No roof needed (renters and business are also welcome)\n\nSeem too good to be true? It’s not. Community solar programs are state-approved to help residents save on their electric bills and support the clean energy revolution. "The last was a rental company that we have and we used them for an air conditioning and heating system. It was Bototach Mechanical. It’s been a good program for us. They’re very responsive. I don’t know what the thought process was. My husband said, well let’s try these guys and so we did. We have an older home and it’s proved to be a very good deal. The quality has been pretty good, so I would give them an A for the quality. I will give you one helpful hint though. If the company decides they want to replace an appliance, you need to call them and negotiate with them because you can upgrade, but you need to talk to them in person not just do it over the internet."

Solar Panels questions, answered by experts

There are a few qualifying questions you should ask a local solar panel company before hiring them:

  • Will you handle permits for the installation?

  • Does your total price include the equipment and labor?

  • How long do you expect the installation process to take?

  • What kind of workmanship warranty do you include with your installations?

  • Who should I contact if I have a problem with my system after installation?

  • Do you install the panels or outsource the work to third parties?

  • Will you file for solar incentives for me?

Yes, installing solar panels or a solar roof can increase your home's value by approximately 4% to 6%. For a home with a median value of $429,000, this could translate to an increase of around $17,000. A well-maintained solar installation appeals to environmentally-conscious buyers and those looking to lower their utility bills, often helping homes sell faster and at a premium in areas with high electricity rates. However, the exact increase in value depends on factors like the local real estate market, energy costs, and available solar incentives. It's also important that the system is correctly installed and maintained; an older or poorly maintained system may not add significant value, particularly if it's near the end of its lifespan. Other solar features, like panels on a shed, can also boost your home's value.

Ideally, you want to place them facing true south. This is different from what a compass shows, which is called the magnetic south. You can find true south by using an online calculator as long as you know the longitude and latitude of your property. Solar panel placement is key to maximizing the energy you generate, so this is an important step.

Installing solar panels is worth it if you’re frustrated with paying high utility bills, live in a sunny location, and qualify for tax credits and incentives. Most homeowners cut between $650 and $1,500 from their utility bills each year by installing solar panels. Over the course of your panel’s warranty, you could save anywhere from $16,300 to $37,500, though those in sunny areas with high energy costs could save more than $100,000.

Yes, it is possible to install solar panels on a tar and gravel roof, but it is not the ideal roofing material for a solar installation. The process requires roof penetrations to install the solar racking system. While installers will seal these penetrations, they still increase the risk of leaks. This risk is higher on tar and gravel roofs, which are often flat. Flat roofs are more prone to leaks than sloped roofs because they can pool water during heavy rain and hold snow for longer periods, exposing the roof to more moisture.
