Chimney caps have a solid top but perforated sides so smoke can exit safely. If rain or snow falls downward, chimney caps can protect the chimney’s interior. Just note that if rain or snow blows in sideways, there’s a higher likelihood it will enter the chimney—but it's not often a cause for concern as long as you have a cap.

If you’re choosing between a roof overlay and a tear-off, opt for a tear-off and full roof replacement instead of a roof overlay if possible. The cost savings from an overlay can easily be eclipsed by repair costs, the effects of structural damage from the additional weight, and needing to replace your roof sooner than expected. A full replacement will last longer and is less likely to need damage repaired over time.

Once framing is complete, you will need the following materials to roof a house:

  • Underlayment for waterproofing

  • Roof covering, like metal or asphalt shingles

Shingles should overhang the drip edge by no more than 3/4-inch. Longer overhangs will more easily get caught in wind and leave you with an increased risk of roof uplift. You should have an overhang of at least 1/2-inch, though, as anything shorter can increase the risk of moisture getting blown under the shingles and damaging your roof deck or fascia.

You can walk on a tar and gravel roof, but you should avoid it if possible. This type of flat roof is the most resilient to damage from foot traffic, as the gravel protects the roofing membrane from punctures, but it’s still best to limit foot traffic. Hire professionals to clean your roof drains and carry out inspections and repairs to reduce the risk of damage.
