"This job was to clean out the ash pit below the fireplace at my house. I don’t think they (2 guys) had experience with this type of fire box. However, that did not deter them. They investigated the structure, did research using their smartphones, worked in less than perfect conditions, to do the difficult job to my satisfaction."

"A water line had busted in our garage basement and flooded over 20 gallons of water everywhere. After shutting off the water and cleaning the mess up, I knew exactly who to call. Baron from H&H Construction came out in a timely manner, assessed the damages and was able to find the root cause of our problem. He repaired and replaced our broken water line and insulated the lines so they are properly protected from breaking down again. Baron was detailed in his work and kept me informed throughout the entire process . As a homeowner, I cannot recommend H&H Construction enough, their work is phenomenal!"

I am a young business owner and brand new father! I have worked all over the construction industry from a young age and became a licensed plumber before I finished highschool. The name “One man” Freelancing was inspired by my service in the WV national guard where I still currently serve as the “one man” a term given to the cannon crewmember who loads and fires the artillery cannons. I have a broad range of knowledge and problem solving skills, if I don’t know how to do the job I will surely be able to learn and you will not be disappointed with results!

Deck Cleaning questions, answered by experts

While experienced DIYers may take on the challenge, hiring a licensed professional is often the best route, especially for larger or elevated structures. A local deck contractor is typically the best pro for the job, as they have specialized experience and are knowledgeable about local building codes, ensuring your deck is built safely and designed to last. Other professionals who can build a deck include general contractors and carpenters, who may be more readily available in some regions.

It is definitely worth sanding a deck to ensure the wood absorbs new stain. Sanding a deck removes the outer layers of aging wood, allowing the stain to penetrate. It also gives a fresh look to the entire surface as part of the deck refinishing process. Without sanding, your stain or sealant is less likely to absorb into the wood. While sanding a deck is a time-intensive project, the rewards are noticeable and long-lasting.

Pressure-treated wood contains preservatives that give the material internal protection from rot and pests. Untreated lumber won’t last more than a few years unless you choose a more expensive wood, like cedar, that naturally stands up well to moisture. Composite decking can outlast wood but is more expensive and doesn’t look as natural. Keep in mind that you’ll need to seal any exterior wood product to protect it from the elements and other forms of external damage.

In most cases, there should be a small gap between the house and the deck, usually no more than ½ to ¾ of an inch. This space allows water and moisture to flow through instead of pooling against the side of your house. It also lets flashing protect your siding from runoff, which is one of the most common issues with decks.

The proper and most comfortable height for a deck stair riser, also called a step, is between four and seven inches. A height of seven inches is often considered ideal for a strain-free step that minimizes the risk of trips and falls. While it is possible to have risers up to 12 inches, this height can be challenging for children, pets, or individuals with mobility issues. For optimal safety and comfort, pair a seven-inch riser with a tread depth (or run) of at least 10 to 12 inches. Always check your local building codes, as they may have specific requirements that differ from these general recommendations.
