"We have worked with Justin & his team (“Gutter Ethics”) for the last several years. We found Gutter Ethics on Angie’s List and they were on the top of list with an overall A rating with lots of positive comments / reviews. Justin’s team started out mainly cleaning our gutters and doing a check around the roof line where the gutters were to see everything looked good. They did a good job: they call before they came over, cleaned up the debris, and never had any problems. Then we started to have a problem with our skylight windows…they were starting to leak. Called Justin to see if his team could help us out with the problem. His team came over, looked over the situation, found the problem and presented us with a quote on how much it would cost to fix the problem. Did some comparative shopping and found out their offer was just as competitive as other vendors. Decided to go with Gutter Ethics since they had been doing a good job on our gutter cleaning. They did an excellent job on the fixing the issue. It was done quickly, their team were very professional and they cleaned up after they were done. The next project Justin’s team did for us was replacing the roof on our home. Again, Justin’s team offered us a quote on how much it would cost to do the job. Again did some comparative shopping that yielded the same results…their offer was competitive as other vendors. Went with Gutter Ethics again and they provided the same excellent results as before. The job was done quickly, they were professional and most importantly…cleaned up after they were done. We have high praises for Gutter Ethics and we continue to use them to this day. We would recommend them on any roof related projects."

"Originally we scheduled Mr. Handyman to come out and pressure wash the house. The day before we changed plans and decided to get the front storm door replaced instead. The frame was starting to come separated from the house door frame. Kevin from Mr. Handyman showed up on time. I explained that we changed plans and wanted to do the storm door instead of the pressure washing. He assessed the door and we went to Lowe's to get the door, door handle and 2x4's. When we got back Kevin went right to work taking the old door and framing down and did a great job with the new framing, caulking and installation and adjustment to the new door. Once he was finished he asked if there was anything else. I asked if he could pound in the gutter spikes that were sticking out and he did without any trouble. While he was on the roof he noticed three vent gaskets were dry rotted so he mentioned that and we had him replace those. Also, we had a spot in the soffit where the birds were getting into the attack. he promptly came up with a solution and denied them further access. Kevin is profession, polite, knowledgeable and very skilled! This is the second time we have used Mr. Handyman we highly recommend them for any of your needs, definitely worth the money!!!!"

Skylights questions, answered by experts

Skylights are the most likely windows to leak if installed improperly, so there are a few questions you should ask any skylight installer before you hire them:

  • Do you specialize in skylight installation or only windows in general?

  • Do you offer any kind of warranty for the installation?

  • What recourse do I have if the skylight leaks shortly after installation?

  • Do you have references I can speak with?

  • How long have you been in business?

  • Are you licensed and insured?

The type of lighting you choose can have a big part in the aesthetic and function of your space. Ambient lighting refers to indirect or diffused lighting that evenly reaches most areas of the space. Task lighting illuminates specific areas, such as a workspace. Accent lighting draws attention to details in your home, and decorative lighting draws attention to itself.

Yes, skylights can affect a home’s energy efficiency, either positively or negatively. Properly installed, energy-efficient skylights with Low-E coatings, double glazing, and UV-blocking glass can help regulate indoor temperatures and reduce heating and cooling costs. However, poorly insulated or older skylights can contribute to heat loss in winter and excess heat gain in summer, lowering overall energy efficiency.

Common skylight issues include leaks, condensation between glass panes, damaged seals, and cracks in the glazing. Regular exposure to weather elements can lead to these problems, requiring timely attention to preserve the integrity of the skylight and the surrounding roof structure.

In most cases, installing skylights will add value to your home, making them a worthwhile investment for many homeowners. Buyers are often attracted to the aesthetic appeal of skylights, as they make rooms feel brighter, airier, and more spacious by introducing natural light without compromising privacy. Beyond aesthetics, skylights can offer monetary benefits by potentially reducing energy bills. Additionally, models that can be opened provide extra ventilation, which is particularly useful in hotter climates for allowing accumulated hot air to escape from the ceiling. However, the return on investment depends on several factors. To maximize value, it's crucial that the skylights are installed by an experienced professional to avoid risks like water damage, which can deter savvy buyers. Regular maintenance and cleaning are also important. Furthermore, choosing the right frame and glazing materials for your specific climate will enhance their performance and appeal. While skylights are generally seen as an asset, homeowners should also consider the initial cost, which averages around $1,500 for installation.
