When you are laying hardwood flooring—or any other material that does not flex well with humidity—you will want to check the moisture level of your subfloor before proceeding. Per the International Code Council, walk-in shower floors should have a minimum slope of 1/4-inch per foot (or a 2% slope) towards the drain. The slope should be no steeper than 1/2-inch per foot (or a 4% slope). This helps safely direct water into the drain rather than all over your bathroom.

A concrete slab costs between $3,600 and $7,200. The price can fall outside of this range if you need a slab that’s thicker than normal, or if you want or need reinforcements, like steel rebar. In some cases, you may be able to purchase a prefabricated concrete slab that is delivered to you already poured.

Unfortunately, concrete cracks happen, so there’s no surefire way to avoid them long-term. To slow down the cracking, apply a sealant every two to three years and use sand rather than salt to melt snow or ice. Using salt speeds up the freeze-thaw cycle, which may increase the likelihood of cracking. Additionally, keep vehicles and heavy machinery off of your concrete, as the weight can lead to more cracking.

If you over-trowel concrete, it will be difficult for moisture to move through it. For this reason, it may be worthwhile to hire a professional, especially if you don’t have the advanced knowledge and techniques required to avoid this issue.
