"I desperately was in need of a company to help clean a house my family purchased at the end of April 2024. Our final approval for buying our house came mere days before closing and I feared I would not be able to find someone to clean on such short notice. I began my search for a cleaning company and after reaching out to several companies I started to lose hope once I found out they were booked on the day we closed, or they never bothered to return my call/email. But then I received a call back from Dawn at Northwoods Premier Cleaning company and to my surprise they had received a cancellation for the day we closed so they were available! We discussed the job over the phone: my family was buying an old farmhouse, there was a possibility the current owner was going to leave personal items, he was a heavy smoker and we didnâ t really know what we were getting ourselves in to until we received possession of the house on the day we closed. I was quoted a price range based on the square footage of the house for the work I was looking at having done, and I agreed. Dawn and I assumed it would take a couple of hours to clean the house. On closing day, we decided to meet at the house at noon (there were two ladies, Dawn and Tammy, that came to clean, they arrived on time and used their own equipment). Unfortunately, my house was worse than I expected and these ladies were literal rock stars! Walls and ceilings were scrubbed for nicotine, base boards and hard wood floors were scrubbed with wood cleaner on their hands and knees, they valiantly dealt with a wasp and Asian beetle â problemâ . I was amazed at how clean they were able to get the inside of the refrigerator (yes, there was nicotine inside the freezer and refrigerator!?!). Food mold was discovered inside the kitchen cabinets. Bathroom was scrubbed to the best that it could be. A closet ended up being another source of agony for Tammy as she diligently worked. Overall what was supposed to take a couple of hours on one day, actually took eight hours and two days. The price was more than what I was quoted, but that was due to the conditions that we were not expecting. Dawn was professional and asked me for permission about the extra cost before proceeding. I appreciated the feedback and know the services they provided was worth every penny I paid. In addition, I was given many tips and advice for future upkeep in my home. Several of their suggestions Iâ ve already utilized and I greatly appreciate their expertise. I only needed a one time move-in cleaning, but ended up with a deep clean service and would definitely utilize their services again in the future. I highly recommend Northwoods Premier Cleaning company for your cleaning needs."

"Jeremy showed up right on time. He cleaned the carpet so quietly and efficiently even our normally high strung dog didn't notice him much. He was up front about the things that could and couldn't be fixed and knowledgeable about cleaning carpet. We even had Pad Injection done at the site of a couple of really bad pet soiling areas. The whole house smells nice and clean now, and the carpets look great. There were a few spots that couldn't be gotten totally clean due to abuse on our part (really we should vacuum more often) but it looks fantastic. He took extra time at the end with his UV light to look for any remaining pet stains."

Drapery Cleaning questions, answered by experts

The best way to clean drapes or curtains depends on the fabric. Always check the care tag for instructions before attempting to wash them.

You can typically clean drapes yourself if they are made of durable materials like cotton, cotton blends, polyester, or burlap, which can often be machine-washed. However, some fabrics can be hand-washed.

For delicate materials such as linen, silk, velvet, lace, sateen, or wool, it is best to hire a professional drapery cleaner. These fabrics are often dry-clean only and can be damaged, shrink, or be destroyed by machine washing or using the wrong cleaning solutions.

If the care tag is missing, the drapes are old, thin, brittle, or have existing damage like pulls or tears, it's safest to have them professionally cleaned. A professional will use the correct methods and solutions for a safe, deep cleaning.

The recommended frequency for professionally cleaning drapes varies. As a general guideline, aim for every four to five years. However, you should consider more frequent cleanings in specific circumstances. For homes with pets, heavy soiling, or residents with severe allergies, cleaning every two to three years—or even two to four times per year—is beneficial. Light-colored drapes may need cleaning every one to two years to maintain their appearance. Some also follow a biannual schedule, cleaning in the spring to remove winter dust and in the fall to remove summer pollen. In between professional services, lightly vacuum your drapes with a special attachment to remove surface debris, but avoid abrasive brushes on delicate fabrics like silk and linen.

There are several ways to store clothes properly and keep them smelling good. You can keep clothing in a climate-controlled closet for best results, but if this isn’t in your budget, there are many DIY solutions. From using air freshener sprays to keeping a box of baking soda in the closet, you can eliminate unwanted odors. Always store clean, dry clothes in the closet to minimize odors.

Insulating windows without plastic is usually the better method. Outside of simply replacing your windows, you could buy cellular shades, which trap air between the window and the home, add a window film that blocks UV rays and traps heat, or cover your windows with a low-emissivity coating called “low-E.”

You should avoid using a pressure washer on any surface or item that could be damaged by the high-pressure spray, as some materials are too delicate to withstand the force.

Key items and surfaces to avoid include:

  • Electrical Components: Never pressure wash electrical systems, as water can cause short-circuits and create a safety hazard. This includes utility meters, breaker boxes, electrical outlets, generators, and HVAC or air conditioner units.

  • Delicate and Fragile Materials: Fragile items can crack, shatter, or be stripped by the pressure. Avoid pressure washing windows, glass, light fixtures, shingled roofs (especially asphalt), and stucco.

  • Painted, Stained, or Sealed Surfaces: Unless your goal is to strip the finish, do not pressure wash painted surfaces, stained wood (like decks), or anything with a protective seal that could be stripped away. Be especially cautious with older surfaces that may contain lead paint.

  • Soft Woods and Certain Decking: Delicate surfaces like softwood, composite decking, and antique or wooden patio furniture can be etched or damaged. If you must wash wood, use a lower-powered pressure washer with a wide-angle nozzle to prevent damage.

  • Living Things: Never use a pressure washer on people, pets, or plants. The force can cause serious injury and will destroy landscaping.
