"We needed the asbestos abatement for our tile and mastic in our basement living areas. Todd did a great job explaining our options and the pros and cons of each. We ultimately went for total removal as opposed to encapsulation. Removal took 1½ days. Steve and Heather were exceptional, and the results exceeded our expectations. As you might guess, when we found out we had asbestos, we were a bit disheartened, but Umbrella made the entire process clear, informative, and reassuring. I cannot recommend this company highly enough. We are extremely happy and satisfied."

"They did a complete home energy audit and gave me an itemized estimate so I could choose what aspects I wanted done. I chose to do everything they recommended. They removed old insulation and put in insulation up to 49R, removed mold and corrected venting for a bath fan that had not been properly vented to the out of doors. And a lot more. I was very pleased with their work. And they were FUN to work with and I learned a lot."

"I was impressed with the extent of knowledge that the tech exhibited upon his first visit. He was concerned and as interested in knowing the source of my problem as I was. He had a very quick understanding of what my needs were. I believe that he had the most reasonable explanation for the cause of the mold and more importantly, his company was going to handle it in the manner that I thought was safest in every way for me and my household. His explanation seemed to stem from experience and I was confident that my health was protected while doing this mold removal process. I appreciated not being scared into doing this removal."

Asbestos Removal questions, answered by experts

Asbestos encapsulation is an alternative to asbestos abatement or removal. Suppose you have hired an asbestos testing service and they recommend encapsulation. In that case, they will cover the asbestos with a protective barrier or put it in a sealed enclosure so the fibers cannot escape. Encapsulation usually costs between $2 and $6 per square foot.

Vermiculite insulation can be hazardous if it contains asbestos. Asbestos fibers, when released into the air and inhaled, can pose significant health risks. The EPA recommends leaving vermiculite insulation undisturbed to avoid potential exposure. It is crucial to have vermiculite insulation tested by a certified professional to determine if it contains asbestos. If asbestos is present, proper precautions should be taken, including containment or removal by licensed abatement professionals.

Asbestos is a carcinogen, meaning it increases the risk of cancer. Inhaling asbestos fibers is linked to several respiratory issues, including asbestosis, or scarring on the lungs, lung cancer, and mesothelioma, another type of cancer. There's also a link between asbestos exposure and an increased risk of colon cancer and other cancers of the digestive system.

Usually, the people most at risk for disease related to asbestos exposure are those who spend a lot of time working around the material without protection. Electricians who work with asbestos wire have a higher risk of developing mesothelioma or lung cancer due to their exposure.

Asbestos-containing materials are not easily affected by water and do not disintegrate or dissolve when exposed to it. However, porous materials can deteriorate due to water exposure, leading to the release of asbestos fibers into the air. The settling of asbestos fibers can also occur as water makes them heavy, which reduces the risk of airborne exposure, though future disturbance of the materials could cause risk. Wetting asbestos-containing materials does not constitute safe removal, and the proper handling and disposal of asbestos materials should be left to professionals.

Detailed cleaning, air quality testing, and proper disposal of hazardous materials.
