"I had a water leak around a window. Jorge promptly came and inspected it as well as all my windows. He took pictures of what he found. Very little caulking around the windows and there were gaps in it. He showed me the pictures and we discussed the work that needed done. With the Fall rain season upon us, he was able to quickly schedule the work. I really appreciated this. Once he completed the work, he took me around and showed me what he did. It looks much better than the previous caulking! I recommend Jorge for his attention to detail and efficiency. I am going to keep in him in mind for any future needs and definitely call him."

"Why can we only leave a 5 star rating? Christopher and crew exceeded our expectations for our restoration project. Our project was to replace the decorative wrap on the 16 foot support columns on the entrance porch at the front of our house. The original wrap was 20 years old and parts had begun to rot. During the bid process Christopher suggested that we replace the wooden wrap with a Hardy plank type material that would last longer than wood. (the original wood wrap was painted). During the removal of the original wrap we noticed that the wrap framing was fairly lightweight, just enough to give the wrap something to be nailed to. Christopher removed the lightweight framing and installed a stronger frame. The new wrap that was installed looks considerably better and richer. The attention to detail, down to the router work on decorative panels, is impressive. Christopher was very responsive to our questions and every day they left the worksite spotlessly clean."

"Always wanted to make use of my back yard patio. I’ve seen patio covers before and never wanted the cheap ones I’ve seen around. Then Stephan came by and offered this premium quality aluminum and Lexan cover and it transformed my living space and added major value to my home. Stephen’s crew was very transparent and organized. They were able to assemble and install my 11x24 cover within an 8 hour day."

"Converting our dusty old garage into a functional home office was one of the best choices we?ve made, and EcoStar Remodeling made it possible. Foster had great ideas for how to insulate the space and add windows for natural light, which really transformed it from a dark storage area to a bright, inviting workspace. The crew worked efficiently and left everything clean when they wrapped up each day. The new office has made working from home so much better, quiet, comfortable, and adds value to our house. We highly recommend Foster and his team!"

"Scott Lewis of Home Enhancements is the ultimate contractor who has obviously done many, many decks before and knows what he is doing.  He has integrity, is fair, a good designer, a genuine craftsman who takes pride in his work, methodical, personable, reasonable in price and interactions, a great communicator, cooperative, responsive to our interests, safe, and keeps a neat work site.  I could go on and on about Scott.  You can't find a better contractor for decks.  I only wish that he did other work as well as I would hire him in a heartbeat. It was an absolute pleasure to have Scott do our deck, and we love the finished product.  There were a couple of very minor things that I brought up to him during construction, and he cheerfully and easily found a solution to them.  Other than the framing for the garage door below the deck that we agreed ahead of time was not in his cost, there were no change orders.  His lump sum price that we contracted for is what the final cost was.  When the city's inspector came for the final inspection of the deck, he carefully looked it over and was very impressed with the quality of the workmanship and found no problems, but only offered praise.  We interviewed a number of contractors before finding Scott and were not particularly impressed with the others.  But we instantly liked him when he came to look at our project.  He listened to us and didn't make snap judgments about what we should do, but gently offered his opinion when we didn't know which way to go.  Unlike larger contractors that have high overhead that you end up paying for, Scott is a small business who worked with his very skilled and knowledgeable son on the project.  Scott's concern is to do the project right and he calmly and professionally went about the process of building us a deck that will last a lifetime.  You can't go wrong with Scott of Home Enhancements and I offer up my unqualified recommendation of him as an outstanding deck contractor!

Awnings questions, answered by experts

Awnings offer a number of benefits, including:

  • Reduced summer home cooling costs with lower solar heat gains

  • Protection from sun, rain, and snow damage

  • Increased curb appeal for your home

Keep in mind that awnings also have drawbacks, including the potential to reduce your view, block natural light, and create new occasional home maintenance needs.

It depends on how you’ll use it. Both awnings and pergolas create shelter in outdoor areas, but pergolas have grid-style roofs, which are more open than awnings and not as effective at blocking out UV rays and precipitation. Also, pergolas are permanent structures, so you can’t put them away when you aren’t using them (unlike retractable awnings).

On average, awning costs range from $1,400 to $4,400. The low end of the cost range can be around $100 up to $7,500 on the high end. Cost factors include the type of awning, size, and location. Portable awnings are the most affordable and DIY-friendly to install, costing $100 to $400. Larger, motorized awnings tend to be more solidly built, ranging in price from $2,000 to $3,500.

Regular cleaning, inspecting for wear, and retracting during storms extend its lifespan.

It’s not a good idea to allow heavy rain to fall on your awning, as puddling can occur and overload the awning. Your awning should be able to handle a light rain, though you should allow it to dry out before retracting it or open it to dry as soon as the rain stops. As always, consult manufacturer guidelines for using and caring for your awning.
