"I started this project months ago to completely reinsulate my attic with none of the experience; let me tell you, not a beginner-friendly DIY project. You gotta be Spider-Man to crawl around in my attic space, which I did numerous times. "I needed my attic insulation updated. It had the original “blown in” loose material from 1975. After 49 years it had deteriorated and compressed. It was only a few inches deep. Also a leak in our old roof (recently replaced) had caused some mold in the old insulation. It had to be removed completely and redone. I called JB Insulation and asked for an estimate. Jose came over and inspected our attic. His experience and expertise was evident by how he explained everything. I felt very confident that I wanted his company to do the job. His price was very competitive and offered us the most value for our money. On the day of the job, his guys took much care in preparing for the job. They covered and taped our floors and wall corners to protect our home’s interior. They used a high powered insulation vacuum and removed all of the old insulation. Not necessarily. A higher R-value simply means that the insulation has a higher heat resistance and performs better in terms of how much heat passes through the material. This can be better for some homes, or it can be too high of an R-value for other homes. Again, your climate zone determines whether the insulation is better for your home.
The best type of insulation for your home depends on your specific needs, climate, and the area you are insulating. For new construction, structural insulated panels are a highly energy-efficient option that is easy to install during the building process. In very warm climates, reflective insulation can be a cost-effective choice. For cold climates, fiberglass is an excellent option due to its high R-value and resistance to settling over time. Spray foam works well in humid environments because of its moisture-resistant properties. For standard attics, loose-fill, spray foam, or blown-in insulation are all suitable options.
If you need to insulate behind finished walls, the best option will likely be to have an insulation professional install blown-in insulation. The installation requires small holes cut in your wall, after which the installer can blow loose-fill insulation into the void. After the installation, you’ll have minor drywall patching, which shouldn’t cost more than $100. Compared to ripping down the existing drywall, using a different type of insulation, and replacing and finishing the drywall, this should save you hundreds or even thousands, depending on the size of the room you’re insulating.
At a minimum, blown-in insulation lasts 20 to 30 years. Cellulose and sheep’s wool come from natural materials, so they likely max out at around 30 years. Fiberglass and rockwool feature artificial materials that boast lengthy lifespans, up to 50 years, or even longer in some cases. As always, this timeline assumes you don’t run into any issues, such as flooding or mold, that shorten the lifespan.
It’s technically possible to install loose-fill cellulose insulation without a blower, but it’s much more time-consuming, tedious, and dangerous. You’ll need to wear the proper protective coverings to handle the cellulose after it’s been doused in boric acid; use a shovel when you can to transport the material from the bag into the wall cavity.
That said, if you purchase cellulose materials at a home improvement store, ask if they rent out blowers for free or at a discounted rate. In many cases, if you buy the material from the store, they’ll rent out the blower at no extra cost.
