The right depth depends on your intended use for the area. For instance, pea gravel for walkways and patios typically only needs to be about 2 to 3 inches deep. However, driveways and other areas with heavier loads may require 4 to 6 inches for better stability.

Mulch is best used in garden beds and yards, not in your driveway as pothole filler. It is meant to stimulate plant growth. Upon repeated pressure, it turns into compost, which also serves as fertilizer for weeds to take over. The roots will then break into your driveway, leading to more material loss and structural collapses.

No one likes running out of materials during a project, so calculating the right amount of gravel needed for your driveway is an absolute must. The best soil to put around a house foundation is fill dirt, which is soil that’s specifically designed for covering large areas and filling in holes. Don’t waste money regrading around your foundation with expensive topsoil. Use topsoil only for the last layer of soil, about 5 to 10 inches, so that when you do your foundation planting, your grass and plants will have the nutrients they need to grow.
