Small jobs welcome

"This contractor was recommended to me by another contractor that didn’t have the time for my project. Things that really stood out: 1. He was very thorough during our walk through and with his quote. 2. I had a vision of what I wanted and although I had pictures to help, he did a great job completing everything I asked and it was perfect. 3. The job was completed on time and was very reasonably priced. 4. When I wasn’t sure of the best product to use but knew what I wanted it to look like, he would offer options from lower priced, mid-range, and higher-end. Gave me pros and cons and left it up to me to choose, and I appreciated the options. The job was a remodel of the living room, dining room, and entryway. He replaced four windows and the front door. Closed off one wall and made the entry on another. Replaced the entryway closet with a built-in. The walls, ceiling, and trim were updated, installed, and painted. He also did the flooring"

"This is the second time I called them. They do great work and are great people. The first time I used them they were part of a competitive bid process and they chose a significantly less expensive approach to my problem which was minor. I firmly believe the other contractors wanted a significant payout to make it worth their while to do the work. This contractor will tell you truthfully what is wrong and will fix it for a fair price. When it came time for this job I didn't even shop around. And they did not disappoint. If I had anything negative to say it would be that I had to be proactive in getting them to communicate when they would do the work (they are very busy). BUT I did tell them I was in no hurry for it. I think I am partially to blame and won't ding them too much for this. I have other jobs that need to get done and will not hesitate to call them when I can find the extra cash to pay for it. I highly recommend them."

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

The easiest way to tell if a wall is load bearing is to check if it’s an exterior wall or if it runs perpendicular to the joists above and below it (or parallel to beams). Exterior walls are almost always load-bearing, and walls that run under beams or parallel to them are also usually load-bearing. There are exceptions to these rules, and walls that don’t fit into these categories can still be load-bearing. If you’re unsure, hire a structural engineer to look at your home to assess whether or not the wall is structural.

Installing a tongue-and-groove wall requires similar techniques to those associated with installing shiplap. However, because of the precision necessary to make each board fit perfectly and the increased material prices, the cost is higher than that of shiplap installations. Expect to spend between $2 and $6 more per square foot for tongue-and-groove walls versus shiplap ones.

Balcony construction or replacement typically requires a building permit from your local permitting authority. Safety and building integrity are the main reasons for the need to obtain a permit and the subsequent inspections. In some cases, especially cantilevered balconies, your municipality may also require the oversight and signature of a structural engineer.

For a professional carpenter, installing a window seat can take anywhere from a few hours to a few days, depending on some aspects of the project. Aside from building the seat itself, if they have to remove any cabinets, shelves, or baseboards, that will add time to the project.

Yes, you can find ceiling joists using simple tools if a stud finder isn't available.

Using a hammer requires patience and a keen ear. Gently tap the ceiling in a grid pattern, listening for sound changes. A hollow sound indicates space between joists, while a solid, dull thud suggests a joist. Mark the location with a pencil and confirm by tapping from different angles.

Alternatively, you can use a nail, but this method will leave small holes. You'll feel increased resistance when the nail hits a joist. Mark the spot and repeat the process every 16 or 24 inches to map the joist locations. This method is considered less reliable than using a stud finder.
