"Xavier did a fantastic job painting nearly all of the rooms of our house over the course of five days. He has great attention to detail, and truly cares about the quality of his workmanship; If that means two coats of primer and two coats of paint to cover the previous color, he does it without you, the home owner, even having to ask. His ceiling wall lines are beautifully straight. Communicating with Xavier before and during the painting process was easy and he was very responsive. His demeanor is friendly and respectful. We will definitely hire Xavier again for our next painting job."

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

Always sand a deck before repainting so the wood is smooth and ready for paint. While you do not need to fully remove paint before repainting, sanding helps remove any areas with weather and sun damage. Sanding also helps remove chipped or flaking paint and opens the wood pores to improve paint adhesion.

Deciding whether to stain or paint a pool deck depends on your budget, desired look, and the deck's material. Both options can work. Paint offers a wider variety of color options, provides excellent water resistance, and can last longer. However, it requires a primer and can eventually fade or peel. Stain is often cheaper, easier to apply, and penetrates the wood for a more natural look and longer-lasting finish. It also has great water resistance. The downsides are fewer color options and the need for a sealant. The choice can also depend on the deck material; for example, staining may be a better option for concrete as it bonds well and lasts longer than paint.

You should refinish your deck to maintain its appearance, durability, and longevity. Refinishing your deck protects the wood from foot traffic and the elements. It also helps extend its life span by keeping rot, mildew, and termites at bay. By maintaining your deck, you can avoid the cost of replacing your deck sooner. A refinished deck also looks great and restores some of its original beauty.

Costs depend on coating type, labor, site preparation, and required finishes.

Staining a deck with a rag is typically a better option than using a brush, as it helps the stain penetrate deeper into the wood. However, both brushes and rags are best reserved for detailed work because using these tools on an entire deck can require tediously crawling around on your hands and knees. A pad applicator, sprayer, or roller are preferred alternatives to applying stain over the majority of a deck. Use a rag for railings and other detailed work, and let the wood soak up as much of the stain as possible before wiping away drips or pools.
