In the heat of the moment, it's difficult to know how to respond, how to get rid of the animal, or who to contact to deal with animal trapping and removal. "Terrible work, terribly overpriced. Tech broke my vent cover on installation leaving a large hole and the cage wasn't even flush with the wall then just left without telling me they had damaged my property. Took 3 calls to get someone to call me back and repair the poor work and no one ever apologized or offered a discount. Communication is also awful. Never gave advanced notice of when the tech would show up and she then came on a different day than what she had previously said and acted annoyed that I wasn't at home. To make it all worse there were never any mice even caught and I suspect I was scammed and told that droppings from prior work last year were fresh. The company didn't honor their warranty from work done last year because it was a different franchise owner and the new franchise charged an outrageous amount. Now I'm having difficulty getting through to cancel the monthly service I don't need because I don't even have mice. Never use them."

There’s always the risk that something unexpected will happen that causes prices to go up, like discontinued materials or your roofer discovering previously hidden damage to your decking when ripping off the old roof. However, experienced roofers should account for these circumstances in their initial estimates. Roofing contracts are binding, so always check your contract for language about how and why your numbers could change.

Thatched roofs last for between 30 and 50 years in most cases, which is longer than most asphalt roofs. However, getting that life span from your thatched roof requires more maintenance than you’d need for most other materials, including fireproofing, brushing, cleaning, and rethatching as the material gets worn down. You’ll also need routine inspections to ensure you’re not at risk of leaks.

While you technically can add a roof over shakes or shingles, it’s not a good idea. Roofing over existing roofing creates a moisture barrier underneath the new roof and since the trapped material is wood, you can expect a moisture problem. While you could get away with installing a new roof over asphalt or steel, wooden roofs should be removed, new underlayment installed, and the new roof installed over that. Also, the extra weight would add strain to your roof structure.
