"We purchased the house last year and got the kitchen remodeled  six months ago. At that time the double sink (70%-30%) was installed  in Kitchen. I requested my contractor to put garbage disposal with the bigger unit but he  laughed and told me that it not the way...it "always" has to be with the smaller unit.  Considering him the expert, I gave up. However after moving in I found my self digging out the the scapes from the drain cup  with hands and it was gross. I gave up....decided to go against the norms and get the garbage disposal moved. We called few plumbing services and one of them being Fluvanna plumbing service. They gave very reasonable quote and time frame to get it done.   They  ( Jim and his son) showed up in time and found that my garbage disposal was barely hanging with the smaller unit. It was not even screwed in at all by my so called expert " Kitchen remodeling  expert" contractor. There were space issues under bigger unit and would not fit sink without some extra work, so Jim  had to make a quick trip to store  to got supplies. He took care of all issues very well. It was a pleasure to watch a son helping his father and learning from him. Both guys were extremely nice and courteous.
I highly recommend this company and will always use them for all our future needs.

"I called Jamie in the morning, he returned the call shortly afterwards and was able to come that afternoon, even though this wasn't an emergency. The sprayer nozzle in the kitchen sink was dripping and seemed to cause the regular faucet water flow to pulsate. There also was water in the cabinet under the sink leaking  from the sprayer nozzle hosing. Jamie examined everything carefully, cleaned the nozzle and the faucet. He explained the design of the nozzle leads to dripping and explained how to reduce that.  He felt the problem was somewhat due to recent work on the main water lines, so he examined the main water valve, cleaning out a lot of debris that had been caught in the filter screen. He worked carefully and thoroughly and is very polite and pleasant. He honored a $25 coupon that was on the Angie's List site. His regular fee is $85 per hour, but the coupon brought the cost to us down to $60. We would definitely use Jamie again.

"Service was fantastic - Tom and his son were professional, knowledgable, kind, and efficient.  I'm extremely pleased with their work.  They took care of details, and went above and beyond to make sure the areas were in the same (better, even) condition when they had to move furniture or items to facilitate installations, etc.  I will definitely recommend Tommy and will call him for more work around my house.

"He was reliable, polite, on time and a pleasure to have in my home. I had received the offer for 6 hours of work via email from angie's list. So I called him and he came to look at the job. After that we scheduled the date to perform the work in which he was on time and ready to go. He made sure throughout the entire day that I was happy with his work as he progressed. He often asked my opinion on certain things to make sure that I would be happy with the final product. the trim he installed was beautifully done and the holes he patched in the ceiling used to be such an eye sore. I will definitely be calling him for future work and will happily recommend him to others."

Install Garbage Disposal FAQs, answered by experts

While the drain connection for a garbage disposal is nearly universal and fits standard sink drain holes of 3 1/2 to 4 inches, the size of the disposal unit itself is not. You must have enough space in the cabinet underneath your sink to accommodate the disposal's housing. A larger model may not fit in a compact cabinet or if the existing plumbing is arranged in an unusual way. Before buying a new garbage disposal, measure the available space under your sink. If you are replacing an old unit, it's often easiest to choose a new model of a similar size.

Soil is just one of the items you shouldn't put down a garbage disposal. Garbage disposals are only meant for soft, non-fibrous foods. Large amounts of topsoil, dirt, or rocks will damage the blades of your garbage disposal or clog the pipes. If a small amount of dirt goes down the drain as you repot a plant, you shouldn't have to worry, but never dump a whole pot of soil in the sink for fast disposal.

No, you do not need a garbage disposal to have a dishwasher. A dishwasher will work without one, and while it's rare to see a home with a dishwasher that doesn't have a disposal, it is possible. The two appliances pair well and are often installed together because a disposal simplifies meal cleanup.

However, your dishwasher should not be used as a replacement for a garbage disposal. Subjecting it to continuous food leftovers can lead to major clogs. If you choose not to install a garbage disposal, you should thoroughly rinse your plates or scrape excess food into the trash or a compost pile before loading them into the dishwasher to prevent plumbing issues.

Garbage disposals can be considered bad for the environment due to their electricity usage, but good for the environment because they reduce the food waste sent to landfills. If everyone used a garbage disposal, it would tax the wastewater treatment facilities in that region, but if we had to choose one of the options, we’d say they are a net positive on the environment when used correctly.

Your garbage disposal is not draining because it might have a clog due to food waste, a foreign object, grease, oil, fat, or it may have a broken motor. When water doesn't flush out of the disposal, that's a key sign that your disposal has a clog or needs repair.
