"The job went great! Livengood Electric went over and above my expectations for this project. This wasn’t the easiest project out there on sure but with Jake’s expertise he was able to make short work of the project. We have a new service panel do you provide us years ofTrouble free electrical service, and a new generator but when the power goes out! We couldn’t be happier! Thanks again Jake!"

"Work Randy's done has been excellant. The only problem for me, is that he has a very busy schedule and has to fit work on my house in when he has the chance. Based on work done so far I'd highly recommend him. In fact, I have.

"Went great. I was able to remove my old wood stove and window unit A.C. out of my shop after they installed my Mini split unit. They communicated very well with a detailed estimate, so there was no confusion. They were also able to put the unit exactly where I wanted it with no complications. Quick and effective. I wish I would have done it sooner. I'm a "repeat customer.""

"I have worked with this company to do a large amount of electrical work during the renovation of my nearly 100 year old home over a number of years. I’m completely satisfied with all aspects and phases of work that Valley Electrical Services did. There was nothing that I wanted/needed done that this company could not do. That work included replacing the knob and tube wiring, upgrading the home and garage electrical boxes, new lights, switches and outlets in my dining room, living room, main floor bathroom, office, hallways and bedrooms. Completely new electrical work throughout a gutted and expanded kitchen that included under cabinet LED lights. A back dormer was added that included 2 new full bathrooms and wiring through the plaster walls from the basement to the second floor. New lights, switches and outlets in the garage, outside the garage, house, front porch and carport. The workers showed up on time, cleaned up at the end of the day and completed the work on time. There was also no billing surprises. I was completely comfortable leaving them to work in the house while I was not here. This is a company that takes pride in its work. I feel lucky to have found them, would recommend them for any electrical work and and finally no, I’m not a relative. You couldn’t do better with this company doing whatever electrical work you need or want."

"They put a roof on my storage building. They built me a new deck with reinforcement for a hot tub. They also installed the electrical system required for my hot tub. The service and quality of the job was amazing. They gave step by step detail of what they were going to do along the way. It looks so good. We couldnt be happier. Also they were less expensive than the other estimates that we had. You wont be disappointed. Sincerely, Glenda Clark"

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

To reduce AC startup power for a whole-house generator, install a soft start kit or hard start capacitor, which lowers the initial surge by gradually ramping up the compressor. Using a smart load manager can also help by staggering startup loads, preventing a system overload and future costly repairs.

Costs range from $500 to $2,500, depending on generator type and installation complexity.

With proper maintenance, a whole-house generator can last between 20 and 40 years. The specific lifespan depends on how often and for how long the generator is used, and some models may have their life expectancy rated in hours of operation. To maximize its lifespan, expect to spend around $150 to $300 per year for annual maintenance checks from a qualified technician. During these checks, a technician will inspect the engine filter, starting mechanism, fuel, lubrication, and coolant levels. Consulting your installer and choosing a low-impact fuel like natural gas or diesel can also help ensure your generator lasts as long as possible.

Homeowners can often access federal tax credits, such as the Investment Tax Credit (ITC), which covers a percentage of installation costs. Many states and utilities offer additional rebates, grants, or performance-based incentives. These programs can significantly lower your upfront investment. Check the Database of State Incentives for Renewables and Efficiency (DSIRE) or contact your local energy office for current offers.

The cost to install a whole-house generator averages $5,200, with a typical price range of $1,500 to $8,900. However, total costs can vary from $400 for a small portable unit to over $18,000 for a large-capacity system. The most significant cost factor is the generator's size and capacity, but other variables include the brand, fuel type, and labor for assembly and installation.

Generator costs can be broken down by type:

  • Portable or Emergency Backup Generators (1kW–7.5kW): $500 to $2,000

  • Partial-Home Generators (9kW–20kW): $2,000 to $6,500

  • Whole-House Generators (22kW–48kW): $5,000 to $18,000

To avoid paying for more power than you need, consider hiring an electrician to calculate the electrical load for your essential appliances. It is also recommended to get at least three quotes to find the best deal for your specific needs and budget.
