"My garage floor was coated in 2013 with a 10-year warranty, and areas have not adhered properly many times. The company sends workers to "fix" the affected areas, but the fixes do not hold up. The company re-coated the floor once, but I believe that the bare floor was not ground properly when the coating was first applied. Now my floor is unsightly with areas bare or that have been re-worked over and over and not looking like the original finish. A few weeks ago, workers came to re-work the areas, but I told them not to do so because I wanted a more permanent solution to the problems. I have had several email communications with a manager. All they seem to want to do is apply more coating to the affected areas. This pretty much makes the warranty useless."

There are a few different types of finishes to choose from for the final step of the project. 

Water-based polyurethane sealants emit fewer odors and fumes but dry quickly, which can pose a challenge when trying to get a smooth coat. Oil-based polyurethane sealants let out more odors and fumes into the air (it’s especially important to wear a respirator if you choose this type), but they take longer to dry, which can be more forgiving during the finishing step. 

Some may prefer wood oil to polyurethane because rather than creating a layer, it becomes part of the wood. Wood oil takes longer to dry, and is less resistant to wear and tear; however, it creates a natural-looking result by enhancing the grain of the wood. 

Porcelain and ceramic tile are two of the longest-lasting kitchen flooring materials. However, while these materials can withstand a good amount of daily wear and tear, they’re likely to crack if you drop something heavy on them, and they’re pricier than many other options. On average, installing a ceramic tile kitchen floor costs between $1,240 and $11,250. Other durable kitchen flooring options include natural stone and concrete.

It’s a good idea to install a rug pad under the carpet for your stairs. To make the pad fit, you’ll need to cut one section for each stair tread that’s about one inch narrower than the stair runner so that it won’t be visible once the carpet is installed on top.

Uneven floors often signal structural issues in a home, so taking them seriously is vital. If you buy an older home with slightly uneven floors, check that your inspector thoroughly inspects the foundation to catch any potential issues early. And if you notice that your floors are becoming more uneven over time, call a pro to check your foundation ASAP.

Laminate flooring takes about 24 to 48  hours to settle. Before this, planks are not completely acclimated to your home, and walking on them could cause shifting and permanent damage to the flooring. You should allow floorboards to acclimate for 48 to 72 hours before installing so that they can adjust to your home’s humidity and temperature levels, but they will continue to acclimate and settle after installation. For this reason, avoid placing any furniture in the room for 72 hours after installation.

Your floors will continue to settle for a few months after installation, becoming less bouncy as they rest.
