"I had a great experience with Vortex Air. They came to my home and professionally installed a Bosch unit. The entire process was smooth, timely, and handled with a high level of professionalism. They showed up on time, completed the work efficiently, and were very cost-effective compared to other options I looked into. "Under new Ownership! I have known the owners personally for 20+ years and can attest that they are amazingly generous, kind, and selfless people. Last month, the HVAC went out in one of my rental homes. I was out of town, and Excel flawlessly completed the project on time and without any complications. My tenants were completely satisfied with the level of professionalism they demonstrated, and I found their pricing to be very reasonable. I'm switching my HVAC company to Excel because of my inside knowledge of who the owners are and the high level of reliability and integrity the possess. You can't go wrong with Excel!"

"Mr. Ashcom did a thorough check of my heat pump system, changing the filter, making adjustments, and diagnosed a small  problem part that needed immediate fixing, so he took care of that as well. One issue I was having had to do with a noisy start and David actually flipped a "quiet" switch that my previous HVAC man had not done, which made the unit much quieter. David was willing to answer questions without a problem; he mentioned things to watch for, since my system is a little older; he did not seem to be looking for repairs that weren't necessary, which I appreciated.
Also, I lived a bit outside of David Ashcom's usual service area, but he came anyway and he didn't have a bad attitude about the extra travel time.  I liked his professional manner and would happily recommend him as an honest contractor.  If he's willing to come back next year, I'll gladly hire him!!

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

One of the first signs of mold in an air conditioner is a musty smell. You're likely to notice the smell when the unit runs, from the air coming out of the vents or the unit itself. You may also be able to see mold growing on the unit, such as near the condenser coils or by the fan. In some cases, there may be visible mold by the vents.

While Freon is mostly odorless, a Freon leak will produce a faint chloroform-like smell. Some people find that Freon's odor has a subtle sweetness to it. Some telltale signs of a Freon leak beyond odor include ice crystals on your evaporator coil, bubbling sounds, and hissing noises.

Yes, scorpions can enter a home through AC vents, especially if the system is not well-sealed. As excellent climbers, they can scale a home's exterior and squeeze through gaps as small as 1/16 of an inch. Scorpions are often attracted to the moisture around air conditioning ducts or seek cooler areas during hot weather, using vents as a pathway inside. They may slip through small openings where the duct meets the vent cover and travel within walls before emerging. To prevent this, inspect your vents, seal any gaps, and consider installing fine mesh screens.

If you’re trying to buy a new AC unit, there are a few crucial factors to consider. Look at the cooling capacity, the available warranty, the energy efficiency, and the type of unit. A ductless unit will cost more up front but may be a more viable option if you don’t already have ductwork. Additionally, a unit with better energy efficiency will cost less to run overall, saving you money on your monthly energy bill.

Yes, you can put an AC unit on the roof of your home or commercial building. For proper installation, you’ll need to ensure the roof surface is flat, it’s accessible for maintenance and cleaning, and an AC installation pro agreed that your home is a candidate for package units. Don’t forget to consider the climate in your area, as homes that experience frequent tropical storms or hurricanes may not benefit from this type of system.
