"Dave, the owner, set an appointment to get rid of my wasp nest the same day I put in my HomeAdvisor exterminator request. Upon arrival to my home, he provided a price for just the job for which I hired him and a price for doing an additional preventative spray. I accepted his reasonable price to do both tasks. Upon completion of those tasks, Dave did a walk around of my house and found a concerning spiderweb. He sprayed that web and around my foundation for no extra cost. He's very personable and enjoyable to interact with. I will hire him for future pest control needs."

Pest Control questions, answered by experts

Aphid infestations happen when aphid-attracting plants like mustard and nasturtium are present, there’s a lack of predators, or plants are weak. Avoid plants that aphids love, and consider increasing natural predators that keep aphids at bay. Birds, wasps, and ladybugs play roles in balancing out aphid infestations, so add pollinator plants and habitats to your yard that attract birds and other aphid predators.

Roaches multiply quickly, which is why an infestation can spread so fast. Female American cockroaches lay about 12 eggs in each egg case, called an ootheca. They can lay six to 14 ootheca during their short lifespan. German cockroaches lay four to five ootheca in their lifetime, with each carrying 20 to 40 eggs. Many roaches can have 100 to over 200 offspring during their lifespan.

Tree sap is not usually dangerous to humans or pets. But some trees do produce dangerous sap. Notably, ash, birch, cedar and similar saps can irritate the skin but aren’t dangerous. Sap from trees like the Brazilwood, Mahogany, Milky Mangrove or well-named Poison Walnut can be corrosive, cause nausea, or trigger those with asthma. But for most backyard trees, protective equipment like a sturdy pair of gloves should be fine.

If you’ve had a prior bat infestation or simply want to avoid having bats invade your home in the first place, there are a few steps you can take without the need for a pro.

  • Seal entry points, such as where your chimney meets your house, or other gaps or holes exist.

  • Use bat deterrents like bright lights or ultrasonic devices to force them away from your home.

  • Reduce bat attractions like standing water and bird nectar feeders inviting bats into your yard.

While they can be effective at getting rid of bed bugs, there are risks of using bed bug pesticides if they’re not applied properly. The EPA only approves products that meet safety standards, but misuse, such as applying spray to skin, using outdoor products indoors, or overusing products, can pose serious health risks. Always read and follow label instructions carefully. For the safest and most effective results, it’s best to hire a licensed pest control professional.
