These two types of foams are similar chemically, but they are applied in a much different way and each has its own pros and cons. STC (Sound Transmission Class) ratings tell you how well something blocks airborne noise. It’s a single number that sums up how much sound a material, like a window, can stop across regular speech frequencies. The higher the number, the better the sound reduction. A typical single-pane window hovers around STC 25 (where you can hear normal conversations), while well-sealed, double-pane options can push past STC 45 (which blocks out loud speech and most music). Just keep in mind that STC doesn’t cover everything—low rumbles like bass or thunder can sneak through—so pairing methods are always ideal for the most peace and quiet.

It depends on your needs and preferences, though many homeowners think it is worth it. Not only is blown-in insulation easy to install, but it is highly efficient with thermal regulation. Most types are mold-resistant, flame-resistant, insect-resistant, and, most importantly, completely safe.

The best type of insulation for your home will largely depend on your climate and the space in your home you are trying to insulate. Fiberglass, for instance, is excellent for cold climates as it has a high R-value and won’t settle much over time; spray foam works well for humid environments as it has excellent moisture-resistant properties.

As long as a licensed professional installs your gas lines, you don’t have to do anything extra to prepare for cold weather. If there are pipes that require a wrap, your installer should have done it for you already. If you want to be absolutely sure your gas system is good to go for winter, the best option is to schedule a gas line inspection.
