"I needed to plumb up and adjust two stone pillars for a historic house built in the 1880s. Along with that, I needed to pull out an old slab of concrete and pour a new ramp that then tied into patio pavers. They did an amazing job at all of it, I absolutely love the work. They fixed and replaced the pillars, pulled out old concrete and poured new, leveled the patio area with pavers and as an added measure of service, they even built new wooden steps replacing some that were deteriorated and falling apart leading up to the porch. They did exceptional work and the price was very fair. I would use Asphalt Masters again for future projects."

In most cases, you don’t need a permit to repave your driveway, although some exceptions exist. If you’re widening your driveway and plan on widening the apron as well, you’ll usually need a permit from the Department of Transportation in your area. This permit costs between $50 and $300 in most cases. Most municipalities will also require a certified and insured contractor do the work relating to the apron and curb cut. On average, asphalt dries within 24 to 72 hours, meaning it’s solid enough for light traffic—walking and careful driving. Full curing—when asphalt reaches peak strength—can take anywhere from three months to a year. During that time, heavy loads and sharp objects can leave marks. Weather, asphalt mix, and thickness all affect how quickly it dries and cures. If you want your asphalt to last, treat it gently until it’s fully cured. For the best results, check with a professional asphalt contractor for their advice.

There are quite a few differences between concrete and asphalt. Concrete is more costly up front and more challenging to repair. Asphalt does better in cold climates and works well with radiant heat systems. Porous asphalt is also excellent for wet climates, as it allows the water to drain away. However, it does get unpleasantly hot in the summer and requires more maintenance than concrete.

The three most common types of asphalt are hot asphalt, MC cold mix, and UPM asphalt. Hot asphalt is used most often for paving and patching roadways while it’s hot and workable. Another benefit: it absorbs heat from the sun and can then help to melt snow and ice more quickly than other surfaces.
