"I was very impressed with Mark. He came out & looked over our problem with venting our clothes dryer located in our garage. He patiently went over our various options with pros & cons of each option & costs involved. We decided to go with venting through the attic & roof. He recommended a 6-inch pipe saying he didn't think a 4-inch would give us the push, lift, thrust, whatever, to push the exhaust air get up that far. We agreed to the price with the 6-inch pipe & also some carpentry work to replace rotted-out wood behind the washer & dryer. He said it should be painted. I didn't see why but didn't disagree. The project was quite detailed & he wrote it all out. I asked if he would be present to oversee since unusual details. He said he always goes out on the 1st day of a job to get it started off on the right foot. The project was delayed serveral weeks because of rain which was understandable & fine with us. I was NOT AT ALL IMPRESSED WITH MARK'S FOLLOW-UP1 He sent out 2 young men probably late teens who had not a clue what I wanted done. They had to make numberous calls back to find Mark to question him & each time they called, it was necessary to wait until he called back to continue work. They really didn't understand the "whys" of the project at alll & didn't have any 6-inch pipe so they used 4-inch but charged me the same price quoted for the 6-inch. They reluctantly painted the wood but thought it unecessary. The boys did good work & I do not fault them at all. The problem was Mark not showing up that first day like he promised he would. What could have been done in less than 4-hrs took 2-days because of this."

Central Vacuum Systems questions, answered by experts

Yes, installing a central vacuum system typically adds value to your home. The ease of use, longevity, and superior suction power of a central vacuum system can add up to $2,000 to your home’s value if you decide to sell. Potential buyers may consider the central vacuum a perk to purchasing your home.

The best way to clean central vacuum pipes is to use a maintenance sheet to dislodge clogs and wipe the inside of the pipes clean. Alternatively, a professional can clean your central vacuum pipes for you.

No. Only the hose or the attachments are portable in a central vacuum system. A portable vacuum is a standalone model like a stick, canister, or upright. A central vacuum system is defined by a central power unit, which is installed in one place like an AC unit, and the connected network of piping to funnel the suction.

They’ll use more electricity than the average upright vacuum, but not remarkably more. Most power units plug into a standard 120-volt outlet and don’t have significant power demands. You shouldn’t notice an increase in electricity bills. If you have any specific questions about energy costs, ask your installer as you examine purchase decisions. Larger power units will need more electricity for their suction levels.

While caulking is handy for quite a bit of jobs, it’s still limited. Any crack or gap larger than 1/4 inch is best left for a more intensive repair job. When you hire house painters, they should run a thorough check to see what they need to repair before they start the job.

Large repairs that caulking typically won’t do well with include cracks or holes larger than a 1/4 inch, rotted wood, or metal surfaces, such as garage doors.
