It’s technically possible to install your own patio, but we don’t recommend it. Installing a patio is labor- and time-intensive, and getting the end product to look professional demands patience and experience. Not only can mistakes lead to unevenness in your patio and expensive repairs, but not grading the surface properly can cause issues with water management, potentially leading to leaks in your home, foundation damage, and flooding. It’s more expensive to hire a patio company, but it’s usually well worth the investment to avoid costly mistakes.
It depends on your priorities. Concrete is more affordable and faster to install, but pavers offer better drainage, are easier to repair, and can create a more high-end look. If budget and speed matter most, go with concrete. If you want style and flexibility, pavers are the better bet.
If you don’t put gravel under concrete, the concrete can crack, sink, bow, or crumble. Even the concrete forming process will not go as smoothly if you are working directly on the soil or bare bedrock. The lack of a proper gravel layer can also lead to drainage issues below your slab, leading to water issues throughout your lawn and around your foundation.
Stepping stones should match an average human stride, so the general rule is to place them about 24 inches between stones. However, many designs put stones closer together. If you choose to plant in between them, leave at least 6 to 8 inches between stones to give plants room to grow.
Most professionals will take two to three weeks to install a patio and return your yard to its previous condition. The timeline for your patio installation will depend on several factors, though, including landscaping features your installer needs to navigate around, the type of patio you’re having installed, and how long any add-ons, like outdoor kitchens, take to complete.
