"I called SETCON to come out & replace/paint an interior door; they also fixed my garage door hardware, my kitchen cabinet so it sits flush, & replaced my light kit in my ceiling fan. I found their prices to be very reasonable! They look/act professional, ethical, respectable, clean, & very cute! They drive professional nice vehicles & look/act totally trustworthy. This is the first handyman service in my 40 years of adulthood that I would strongly recommend & be loyal to. "An older home had been neglected for at least 3 years. Magic Touch cleaned up the mess, removed dead plants, removed or trimmed trees too close to the houseand removed an entire Fall's worth of dead leaves. They worked quickly and professionally. We were impressed enough to accept their offer of monthly maintenance."

Robert Ochoa even threw in some not-so-minor roof repairs for $200 while he was here. Great service, great quality, great clean up, very close to the lowest estimate. The quality and timing were worth the extra $100 or so over the lowest price bidder who couldn't schedule us as quickly.

This company rocks - they came out very quickly to provide an estimate in April 2011 and again in December 2013 (at Christmas). Wind blew down the north side of our shared privacy fence (2011) and blew down our tree on to the south side fence at Christmas (2013). Scheduled us immediately both times, provided a sturdier three horizontal support fence, neighbor friendly, including an entry gate. Knocked each job out in one day.

GREAT JOB!!!

Deck Cleaning questions, answered by experts

It is definitely worth sanding a deck to ensure the wood absorbs new stain. Sanding a deck removes the outer layers of aging wood, allowing the stain to penetrate. It also gives a fresh look to the entire surface as part of the deck refinishing process. Without sanding, your stain or sealant is less likely to absorb into the wood. While sanding a deck is a time-intensive project, the rewards are noticeable and long-lasting.

To flatten a cupped deck board, start by ensuring it’s dry. Then, try flipping the board over so the cupped side faces down and reattach it. If that’s not possible, you can use screws to pull it tighter to the joists or plane the edges slightly to reduce the cup. It’s best to replace severely cupped boards.

While the terms deck and porch are often used interchangeably, they are two distinct structures. A porch is a covered structure, usually attached to the front of a home, that offers protection from the elements. In contrast, a deck is an open, uncovered platform, often attached to the back or side of a home. Because porches have a roof, they typically require less maintenance than decks, but both features need regular cleaning and repairs to stay in good condition.

Unless you’re using a 2-in-1 formula or painting over an existing coat of paint, it pays to apply a coat of primer ahead of your new paint. Decks see a lot of footfall and exposure to extreme and sudden temperature changes and moisture levels. The primer promotes better paint adhesion, moisture repellency, and a smoother finish, which means you’ll often need fewer coats of paint.

No, you don’t need a permit to repair and replace a few boards on an existing deck. However, if you’re making structural changes to the deck or tearing down the old one and building a new one, you will likely need a permit. Check with your local municipality for the regulations and rules in your area, or ask a local contractor who builds decks for advice.
