"Brazos Valley Insulators were very accomodating to my schedule when coming out to quote my house. They came after normal business hours and took their time to go over each thing that they wanted to do. They were very knowledgable making sure that I understood exactly what I would be getting if I chose them. They were very professional. While we did not book them (as insulating our attic in any form was going to be more expensive than what we had in the budget this year), we will certainly consider them in the future once we are ready to go through with the project."

"I bid 4 contractors for my attic insulation addition and solving some problem areas. Two of the contractor only wanted to add blown insulation and did not identify the known issues. Insulation JB did the most comprehensive evaluation and identified some problem areas. Pricing was fair and the work quality was very professional. I would highly recommend Insulation JB."

"We hired GBH for our spray foam insulation during our renovation project and we could not be happier with the results. The guys were in and out in no time. We immediately could feel the difference in some of the draftiest spaces on our first floor. Would absolutely recommend it if you are looking into spray foam or insulation."

Insulation questions, answered by experts

The primary downside of radiant barriers is their limited effectiveness in cold climates. They are designed to reflect radiant heat, making them less beneficial in cooler conditions where heat retention is more important.

Radiant barriers require proper installation to maximize effectiveness. Incorrect placement can lead to minimal benefits. They also do not provide insulation, meaning they should be used in conjunction with traditional insulation for optimal energy efficiency.

Water freezes at 32 degrees Fahrenheit, but the actual temperature that can cause frozen pipes can vary. Generally, it takes 12 hours for pipes to freeze at 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

Uninsulated pipes can freeze if it’s 20 degrees Fahrenheit or colder for over three hours. If your pipes are insulated, it can take six hours or longer for pipes to freeze. Note that some pipe types freeze more often than PEX pipes. Copper pipes freeze more often because the copper conducts energy and loses heat quickly.

The primary purpose of insulation is to maintain comfortable temperatures in a home, whether that’s cool air when it’s hot out, or warm air in winter, but that’s not all it can do. All options will also minimize heating and cooling needs, lowering both your carbon footprint and energy bills in turn. And some options, like rigid foam boards, even offer soundproofing benefits, too.

Depending on the item, several different materials are beneficial for long-term storage. Bubble wrap and plastic wrap help ensure delicate ceramics or furniture are safe and secure. High-quality moving boxes made of durable materials like plastic also help ensure the longevity of your storage, as cardboard will degrade faster over time.

Most homeowners installing blown-in insulation as a one-off DIY project should simply rent a blower. They tend to be very heavy, and contractor-grade machines can cost $13,000 to $16,000.
