"Top of the Gutter is a fabulous company! Absolutely top notch customer service! They are trustworthy, dependable, responsive, knowledgeable, punctual and cleaned up so well afterwards that you'd never know they were there. Chris and his team really care that their clients are treated fairly and given a fair price for quality products and superior workmanship. Chris is very personable, very knowledgeable and easy to work with. And, an educator, too! Because he took time to thoroughly explain what to expect from start to finish, I was able to quickly eliminate 4 other companies who seemed more interested in either up-selling or in a hurry to move onto the next sale. Chris was more concerned about giving me what was actually needed. On installation day I left shortly after the Top of the Gutter crew arrived. I returned the next day to find to my delight that they delivered everything they promised. Other than those fabulous new gutters, I could not tell they had been there at all!"

"LeafFilter doesn't clean gutters, they sell and install their LeafFilter Gutter products and only clean the gutters if you buy their product. I can't even begin to afford their product so I wasn't able to get my gutter cleaned by them."

Gutter Cleaning questions, answered by experts

Yes, gutters can still get clogged even with gutter guards installed. While guards significantly reduce the amount of debris that enters your gutters, they are not 100% effective.

Small debris such as pine needles, seedlings, algae, small leaves, and pebbles can pass through the guard's screen or mesh and accumulate over time. Clogs can also form if the guards themselves are not cleaned and become overwhelmed with debris on top, preventing water from entering the gutter.

If this buildup is neglected, it can lead to clogs, water leaks, mold growth, and even plants sprouting from the gutters. The primary benefit of gutter guards is not the complete elimination of maintenance, but a dramatic reduction in how often you need to perform it, often from several times a year to just once a year or less.

The most common problem with gutters is clogging from debris like leaves, blossoms, and seeds from surrounding trees. This debris can block downspouts, leading to improper drainage and water overflow.

Other common issues include:

  • Leaks and holes, which can often be repaired with gutter sealant or caulk.

  • Rust, sagging, or detachment from the roofline.

  • Damage from strong storms.

  • Improperly pitched gutters that don't drain correctly.

Regular cleaning in the spring and fall is the best way to prevent most of these problems. You may need to clean them more often during periods of heavy leaf fall.

Yes, you can use a pressure washer to effectively clean debris, dirt, and grime from your gutters, but it must be done with caution to avoid damage. Always use a low-pressure setting, with a recommended range between 1,200 and 1,800 PSI. Excessive pressure can bend or dent aluminum gutters, damage seams, peel paint, or even knock shingles off your roof, potentially leading to leaks and moisture issues. For a safer alternative, consider soft washing or cleaning them by hand. When using a pressure washer, it is safer to use gutter elbow extensions from the ground rather than climbing a ladder, as the force can cause instability. Due to the risks, you may want to hire a licensed and insured contractor for the job.

No—gutters should be designed and properly installed so they are ready to handle any level of rainflow from your roof. If you notice pooling water around your gutters or on the roof, it’s imperative that you contact a gutter repair pro near you—the slope of your gutters could be off and need adjusting.

If you don't want to install gutter guards, the most common and inexpensive alternative is regular gutter cleaning, either annually, biannually, or as soon as they start to fill up. Using a leaf blower attachment can make this process easier. Other products designed to reduce cleanings include gutter screens (made of wire mesh, nylon, or foam), which are typically less expensive than a full gutter guard installation. You can also find guards and inserts designed specifically to protect your downspouts or opt for a whole gutter system like LeafGuard, which integrates the gutter and guard into a single product.
