All your Home and Ranch Needs for service and repair of Submersible Pumps, Solar Pumps, Windmills, and Tanks

"The Tatsch pump guy cut one pvc pipe and drained the bladder tank. Told me I needed a new bladder tank, and that I could get one from tractor supply. He charged us 190.00 and left. I got a tank from tsc and installed it myself, which was his recommendation. I now still have the same problem and have not only been out his service call fee, but also the price of the new tank. When I called them about it, all I got was voice mail and no return call. Very unprofessional. A total waste of money and time and now I have to call someone else that actually knows what they are doing."

Wells and Pumps questions, answered by experts

There are many signs to look for that will tell you when your irrigation pump is burned out. This may include low water pressure, sprinklers that sputter a lot before turning on, discolored or dirty water, or a pump that stops working altogether. If your pump has any of these issues, it is probably time to replace it.

The right psi for your well pressure tank depends on the tank’s pressure settings. For instance, if yours is set to 30/50 psi (which is common), the ideal psi is 2 to 3 psi below the cut-on pressure—in other words, 27 to 28 psi. However, if it’s at a higher setting of 40/60 psi, 38 psi would be the appropriate level.

Signs that your well is dry include a decrease in water pressure, strange odors coming from faucets, cloudy, bubbly, or discolored water, and water that’s warmer than normal. Signs that your well pump is bad are similar, but you may also notice higher-than-average electric bills, strange clicking sounds, and faucets that spit or sputter.

Yes, you can shock a well yourself, but it can be dangerous if you don’t know what you’re doing. We recommend calling a pro, but if you decide to do it yourself, make sure to follow proper safety precautions. This means wearing the correct safety gear, such as rubber gloves, goggles, and boots. You should also mix the chlorine solution in an open area with plenty of ventilation. Also, make sure not to drink or use the water for a few days afterward, until you’ve flushed the system and retested the water.

There are many reasons you may want to extend the depth of an existing well or drill a new, deeper well on your property. A deeper well can tap cleaner water sources—shallow water may contain more contaminants. With a deeper well, you’ll also have an easier time reaching the water table depth (the level at which underground water is found) and can get past tricky soil conditions.

Plus, if your local building code requires a minimum well depth for safety and environmental standards, you’ll meet the code by digging a deeper well in the first place.
