Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

In many cases, yes, you can remove a fireplace while keeping the chimney. You’d just need to seal the chimney at the bottom and the top. If you’re considering this option, bring it up with your chimney professional. They can determine if your chimney can remain intact without the support of the fireplace underneath it.

Cracks in the chimney can be very serious, depending on their location and size. Even small cracks can become serious over time if left unrepaired. Cracks allow heat and moisture to deteriorate your chimney and harmful carbon monoxide gas to seep into your home. Small cracks can often be caulked, while large cracked sections may require full replacement.

Chimney crowns should be at least 2 inches thick at their thinnest point. If the crown is thinner than 2 inches, it’s more likely to be damaged and allow water to seep into the chimney.

Although no heating appliance can be entirely risk-free, a fireplace insert is considered a safer alternative to a traditional open fireplace, thanks to their enclosed design. With a sealed combustion chamber, a fireplace insert effectively reduces the risk of sparks and embers escaping into the room, minimizing the chance of an accidental fire.

Additionally, an insert comes equipped with various safety features, such as tempered glass doors that create a barrier between the flames and the surrounding space. This enhances both safety and energy efficiency by preventing heat loss. As an added bonus, many inserts are designed to meet strict safety standards that ensure proper ventilation and combustion.

A quality pellet stove that receives proper maintenance should last you about 15 to 20 years. However, how long a pellet stove lasts depends on how well you care for it over the years and how often you call on it for heat. Proper maintenance—including cleaning the vents periodically, vacuuming the ash pan when it gets full, and refreshing the pellets when needed—can help your pellet stove last longer.
