She did not cover any of the furniture while sanding and there were dust clouds walking into my home and I had to pay someone to clean the whole house after the project because of the dust. She was supposed to install two faucets and on one sink the handle is unusable because of installation position. Paid her the original amount with check and she stated she ripped it up because it was not enough. She continues to call and harass me regarding paying her more. One good thing she did was to hang a chandelier and that was okay."

He said he would be at the job at 8 AM and he was there at 8 AM. He said the job would last one day, it lasted one day. "Do not hire?.We hired him to replace a wood fence and porch lights. Light project went ok, but not the fence replacement. He installed a fence post which was out of square. The fence boards he claimed were good quality, cracked next the day from too much pressure. He used 8 ft boards instead of 4 ft. It took him two weeks to return to replace the fence post and six new boards which cracked the next day. He blamed Home Depot for defective boards. He chose their product and blamed Home Depot. I told him he should pull the boards off and cut to 4 ft and re-install. He said he wood for more money. I told him no it was his responsibility to fix it. He never returned. Me and my spouse pulled the boards off, re-cut and re-installed. I should not have listened to his sales pitch."

A tip is not necessary. If you feel that a handyman did a great job for you, the best thing you can do for them is boost their reputation by leaving reviews on as many sites as possible and spreading by word of mouth how good they are. A tip is temporary but a reputation creates a business!

Yes, you should hire a handyman who’s licensed, certified, and insured, if possible. States have different requirements for handyman licensing, registration, and certifications. If licensing is required in your area, you may pay more for a licensed handyman with experience than one who is not licensed or certified, but you’re likely to get a better end result for your project. Be sure to check our state licensing tool to review the local handymen guidelines.

Being certified and/or licensed typically provides the customer with a level of comfort when hiring a handyman, but is not always a guarantee of quality work. Ask the handyman to explain what his or her process to complete your project is, and if you hire this person, check on the work, ask questions, make suggestions. After all, it's your project, your money, and you deserve quality work.

Be aware that not every state requires or even provides a license for a handyman. Many handymen will not or cannot be licensed. If you want a general contractor, hire one (they will be licensed and bonded/insured). Understand what you usually get when you hire a handyman and it is NOT a general contractor.
